You snip off the bottom third (no more than that) branches which gives it the look of a lollipop. Since the bottom fan leaves are not that important and probably are not getting a lot of light anyway, the plant diverts the energy it was using for those leaves and the little popcorn buds it would make there and it channels that energy into the top 2/3 of the plant thereby producing a nice fat cola. That's a whole lot more desirable than having a bunch of little popcorn buds that are a pia to hang up to dry, much less manicure.
