hey everyone. I'm stumped here. Had the awesome idea to just go for it and grow with 12 cfls apread out to light a 4.5x6ft room....now I just kinda hate the idea. Does anyone think it would work? lumens seem decent per sq.ft.,,,,,but only that, decent. Does anyone have experience with a bigger than a closet room and CFL lighting? thanks:leaf:

CFL's work fine in larger spaces, the trick is positioning them so they're within an inch or two of the growth, and as plants get bigger it's better to surround them, providing side lighting too for penetration beyond the canopy...you say 12 CFL's? WHat wattage? You'll probably need more... lol I'm using a 6' x 7' room, and I have one 400w HPS, and 22 CFL's, and am still in deserate need of more light, since i'm trying to run a perpetual and fill that space...

a friend did a all cfl grow in an area close to yours in size and had phenominal(?) results. however, total those actual watts all up and see what it is youre actually using. chances are youd be spending around the same with a HPS light, only difference being that youll get far better results.

Pick up or download a copy of "Marijuana buds for less:Grow 8ox. of bud for less than $100" by SeeMoreBuds. He does a really good job explaining how to grow with CFLs, though it's mostly applicable for growing a few plants at a time in a smaller space.

I had plans of running a 250watt HPS in the flowering room, but then it wouldn't be strictly a cfl grow. maybe next year i will invest in atleast a 400watt.

23 watt 6500K for seeding and veg.....bought the 12 today. No 4 packs for the 42watt 2700K but I think I'll just pick up 6 of them down the road and mix them with a couple 23's.

BigBilly- do you/buddy have any pictures?
I bought 2 bathroom fixtures that were 2 foot long and 3 sockets a piece. Pair that with Y adapters for 6 lights and I've basically got a 3 foot long light board. Also the room is now 3.75ft wide due to the OSB width which I didnt take into account.
Everything points towards I'll be fine, but being my first time indoors it is super easy to doubt myself.
