Lower leaves dying

Hi all. My friend and I are doing our first grow and are running into some trouble. We have 8 plants (from bagseed) under 4 48" fluorescents, 2 warm, 2 cool, 40w each in a small area about 2'w x 4'l, 3'h, running currently 24/0. They were originally potted in Scotts Potting Mix, and then after about 2 weeks (when the initial problems appeared), we thought they were rootbound (which they did seem to be) so we transplanted into bigger pots, which have Miracle Gro Potting Mix in them (we didn't realize that we bought different soil. Oops.). There is a small fan in there, blowing indirectly, which was added about 2.5 weeks into it.

We're about 3.5 weeks into it and the plants seemed to have slowed growth quite a bit since the symptoms started, and the lower leaves are turning yellow, and on a couple they're pretty much all brown and essentially dead now. It seems to be starting just a bit on the next node up on some. We thought it was from overwatering originally, but being conservative on watering didn't seem to really help. No nutrients have been added. Temps have been roughly in the 60's - 70's, with some lows reaching down into the low 50's. I don't have any PH values, but a moisture/ph meter is on the way. We've been just watering with tap water (initially straight from tap, but as of the last week or so it's been left sitting out for 24 hours).

Any ideas? Pic is attached. Thanks!

Yeah I read people's opinions on Miracle Gro potting mix after the fact. I've seen both sides though as well. Some people seem to have no problems also. After doing some more reading it seems like it's nut deficiency, since it's working up and no nutes have been added at all yet.

hi i have the same problem ,i am guessing it might be a too acid soil causing a lack of nutrients to the plant ,and you not using any nutrients or ph balanced water is a problem .go get a ph tester asap flush the pots with balanced water and get some feed ....good luck

After adding some nutes, the plants have already shown quite the improvement after only a couple days! We'll see how things go. pH meter should be here soon too, so I'll have more info. Thanks for the advice so far.

I don't think you should have added nutrients....your plant appears to be over-watered and too much fertilizer. Checking your ph is a good idea but you also need to check to make sure your nutrient levels are in balanced. Otherwise you are playing a guessing game with your baby. Ph meter is a good investment but a nutrient testing is also a good investment...you cannot go wrong once you have one. You need to flush all of the excessing nutrients, monitor the ph, and do not over water. Last but not least patience.

Good Luck

Hi all, just wanted to give an update. It turns out lack of nutrients was in fact my problem, actually. I had miracle gro fertilizer (yeah yeah, let the flaming begin) and added 1/2tsp per gallon of water as recommended for indoor plants (outdoor, 1tsp per gallon). Within a day or so the plants started making an amazing recovery. Growth took off again, leaves went back to a nice green (except for the leaves that were beyond recovery), and things looked great. A little over a week afterward, the problem started again. At 2 weeks after that first feeding, I fed again with the same dosage. Once again, the plants recovered so drastically. So it seems I need to just keep up with the nutrients and find a good balance of frequency. I think I will probably feed weekly now at that dosage. I will soon be going into flowering and will most likely get my hands on some fox farm nutes for that phase.

Also, my pH meter came in and without any adjusting, the pH has been right around 6.7 - 7.0 every time I have checked.

I will get some new pics up sometime soon.

EC meters coming handy huh? Makes things so much easier. I am glad to see you invested in a tool that will keep you on track. Keep us all posted.

I just had the same problem with my plants I used MG soil that was 7.5 ph level. I tried to lower the PH using vineger which did NOT work out but since then I have transplanted to soil with lower PH and everything seems alright!

I think that mg soil may well be to strong for some kinds of weed especially when they are young.
If you want use it try buying a bag of very basic soil and mixing it 50/50 with the basic soil:blsmoke:

Jamaican high phosphorous Bat Guano heightens root and bud development. Till it into the soil, use it as a top dressing, or apply directly to plants in a water dilution. Really good stuff.

Starting off...I would use a soilless mix. You will find it easier to control nutrients and fungus.

Keep in mind a
A soilless mix is also sometimes referred to as a sterile mix because it doesn't contain soil, which can contain bacteria and fungi that is harmful to seedlings and indoor plants.

Holy crap dude my 2 plants look exactly like yours were!! Both started in scott's and recently transplanted into a mix of 65% coco 35% perlite now 2.5 wks old.

They look worse every day and I'm so upset that I can't fix em. I've been ph'ing at 6.4 and can't fig out why they keep yellowing and one leaf is browning. Hum is good, temp too I'm thinking of giving up.

You have to pay for elite status and it doesn't give you respect just extra features and a proper membership.
I give advice to anyone from fdd to a noob.
Dont quote my name again in your rants and get off your high horse:blsmoke:

i was drunk and that was a dumb post, i shouldnt have been talking shit. but for future reference, i will write whatever i want and quote whoever's name i feel like quoting in my stupid drunken rants, which may include you natmoon. ive read good advice that you've given and respect that you know what your talking about, but its just a website and its kinda funny when people get all worked up. i think its pretty funny that i got all worked up about nothing. i only vaguely remember writing that, regardless... apologies.

well my plants looked exactly like yours did and still pretty much do went the nute route never helped.... went the overwatering underwatering route...didnt help then i went the ph route....didnt work... then i went to the west coast cannabis cup 2 days ago and talked to a guy who had grown 120 plants at a time...he told me without a doubt...not enough light after showing him pics.....so i immediatly took that advice placed them under my stronger t5 system and ordered a hps :) but all in all i believe that was my problem as they are looking greener and have resumed growth now
