What are the advantages/disadvantages of each? Please explain your answer.
I would put an opinion up myself but am into my first grow right now. So tell me what you prefer?

LST Pros:
-Appropriate for both growth stages
- Lowers main cola so Auxin (growth hormone) is redistributed to lower shoots for more even growth and light distribution
- Puts slight Stress on the stem causing larger "trunks"
- Easily acquired tools (string, duct tape)
- No slowing of growth
LST Cons:
-Requires vigilance to keep all shoots level

Topping Pros:
-Causes two shoots to form from the main stem (FIMing a technique derived from topping, is cutting the growing tip and removing ~1/2 of all the new growth to form 4 shoots.)
-Can be done multiple times on a plant to increase bushiness
Topping Cons:
-Only for the vegetative stage
-Cutting a growing tip slows your plants growth for a period

Im an LST man through and through. Just bend them out and look at the results.

another con for topping is that the yield per shoot or cola can decrease significantly so that it would have been better off not topping. i haven't tried lst but plant on doing it on my next grow because iv'e heard nothing but good things about it.

training your plant is the best because you don't slow its growth. you only want to top if you going for a monster plant and you want to split its tops.
