Gnats and spider mites become a common annoyance at worst after a few times. A few hours after you water. Soil surface must be dry. Very light dusting. Do not get in eyes or inhale. Only real threat. Cut a piece of the fabric a few inches larger in diameter than your pot. Cut a slit to center of fabric circle. Place on pot and be sure to cover soil completely.Cut ??? U saying sprinkle some diatomacous earth after water n cut fabric to fit right over soil???

Will prevent males from getting back in. The flying ones. And will get a lot of females at the surface. Let plant get drier than normal. Water through the fabric. Dust the fabric again when dry. Takes 2-3 times to break the life cycle. But no real fuss and almost harmless.
Learn outdoors. Clouds of dust until you get a feel for it. And stop over watering if you wish to avoid in the future. LOL. Best wishes.
