it's been harder than I wouldve thought..no different than trying to choose the best female before it flowers.
honestly I gave up trying to select males. females once flowered are all about numbers. (yes outdoors!) just finding killer bud.
Im wrong half the time with males and have to do all that work again. that's why I recently bought some named genetics to find a male and cross with my selected females...if you find a good male, keep it!
my favorite cross I've kept around is a jamican x blue dream

You could be right ghost. I don't think it's a whole lot different than growing though. Think back to your very first harvest. Probably pretty rough. Mine was. But over time you get a feel for it. You learn to identify things, and develop an eye for it. You hone your skill. I don't see how breeding is much different. To me the only edge breeders have is the room to sort through a lot of seeds, and perhaps access to genetics that some folks may not have. Either way, Im gonna give it a go and see what comes if it. At the very least I won't have dropped hundreds of dollars on disappointing shit.....it will be my very own disappointing shit. Lol

Please tell me more about the Jamaican and is the blue dream the sativa pheno that was used? Sounds like a good cross to me. I went to jamaica and brought back a few seeds of different strains i tried in late 90s, those were the days! I think you will do alot better with males from named genetics then you have in past. Breeders today are using others work that was done in the 1990s or earlier(do you guys remember Mark Emerys seed bank)and just mixing them together over and over watering down the high(not potency) and making most have similar highs or buzz types(hybrids). I know theres a few breeders that havent done this but most are. So buying named genetics has been worked by breeders just more then likely all the real work was done along time ago or there just a bag seed from a hermi somebody claims they created.

Yeah, finding the right male seems like the tough part. But once you find that male then the process becomes pretty straight forward. Just look at the breeders. Almost every single female they pollinate with their stud is a clone only that was grown in some stoners basement. The rage around here is Gorilla Glue #4. That wasn't made by a breeder. Even famous strains like Exodus Cheese came from a seed at the bottom of a bag. Most of them are selling hype, not genetics. Also, I would have to imagine that the odds of finding a great male are equal to the odds of finding a great female. So it might take sorting through 5, 10, 15 packs of seeds to find a nice male, but when you do the sky is the limit imo.
I think we all have a tendency to give breeders too much credit. They haven't gone to school for 10 years and came out with a PHD in breeding. They all started out growing weed like the rest of us. Maybe the only thing that they have that the rest of us don't is a sufficient set of balls to market and sell seeds for a schedule 1 substance.

yeah i find it funny how some breeders are treated like rockstars. I totally agree with not having the balls to market and sell seeds, i dont got them or id be selling seeds on tude and Sbay. Best male i know of was a Sour Diesel v3 from Rez. That male created some great crosses by a couple good breeders. SSSDH, Sour Amnesia, Casey Jones,Sour power, g13xDiesel just to name a few better known ones.

bout all I can say, I love sativas, the racier the better
the Jamaican is the male, I've crossed it with a bunch of plants, I really like it.. my only male
the blue dream female was given by a friend, it's a very euphoric relaxed up high that I can still smoke at night. tastes of powder candy blueberries. it was used for flavor mainly but it did have nice nugs. pretty sativa dominant, I can't remember probly 12 weeks
the resulting cross flowers about 18 weeks, it cuts through any high but not as scary as some of my columbians, with a very complex spicy sour red berry type of flavor.
something about the blueberry plants. always seemed relaxing and euphoric. I like using em in crosses

i've done more breeding than any one person should attempt in a life time.
funny thing is, a lot of the ''greatest'' contain stuff that came from my basement (directly or indirectly).
if you want to make seeds, it's as simple as letting the grass grow. if you want to isolate a trait, well now, that takes some thought, preparation, room, and time.
i've not come across anyone who is stabilizing 'strains'. crosses, this that and the other, but none of the 'omg, this is the best ever! how can we take this female, and make her available to others?'.
the process is simple; only takes a couple of years. stabilize by selecting desired traits/phenos for six + generations. do any of you have the patience?
if not, you're chucking pollen, just like everyone else.

i've sprouted some of my old work, that i thought lost forever. low and behold, every single sprout has purple cotyledons...
every one of them. how did that happen? oh, yeah, it's 8th generation, favoring the mother....

I don't doubt that nailing down specific traits takes a lot of time and diligence. However, very few (if any) breeders are doing that anymore. They are hitting their clone du jour with their one stud male, and selling thousands of seeds. I'll take a pass on that for the time being and try it myself. Maybe I end up 100% wrong about this and will come back and concede that there is more to this than meets the eye, and these guys deserve every penny of the hundreds of dollars they charge per pack. My hunch is that I'm not wrong though.

you're not wrong, and that's why i got out of the game. i sold 10 packs for 20$, all stabilized genetics, got banned from sites, all kinds of negative recourse.... just so pollen chuckers with friends can sell bullshit for 40$ a seed and be promoted by websites. i just wanted to spread the wealth, and the blood (so to speak) with other people less fortunate. i had the time, ability, and space to run seeds and cross things, and stabilize, i ran 100 plants a week to test seeds. i just wish i'd have stuck with it, instead of being bullied into saying 'fuck it, you guys can rot'.

i no longer have beans. all of my stock was destroyed about six years ago. i've not been doing any breeding since.
well, i'm just a pollen chucker, but it's great fun if you like the mystery of what you'll get
but there are some breeders that are dropping the males completely
selecting from femmes only, finding the traits they want, and then the colloidal silver to force them to grow male parts
the story is it's much easier to select traits this way

Ever since I got my hands on collodial silver I've just been spraying the popcorn nugs on ALL of my females. If she's a keeper, I've got like, a vial of pollen to hit whoever I want with. So far I've got some femmd fms c99, Dog OG, Hso bubba, Amherst, and desert desiel, special queen #1, etc. I mean its so eaay, I'm never buying seeds again. I do some regular crossing here and there with my bodhi strains, but I even have some femm snowqueen x c99. I'm personally in this to get high consistantly for as cheaply as possible. My original investment of 2-$300 dollars has served me well, what sense does it make to keep spending money on flavors of the week?

alot of seed companies used to stabilize strains but no longer do so. The problem with stabilizing strains. Is the back crossing. Making the genetics have ibl traits. Which makes the strain more susceptible to hermie and more sensitive to stress. Potency gradually lowers each generation. The benefit is fewer phenos and no mutation of clones generation after generation. That's why dutchpassion discontinued their ibl master kush. Alot of unhappy growers. I grew that strain for years so I can attest to that. They now pass of Hindu skunk as master kush as all the other companies do as well. With pollen chucking. There is more a variety of phenos. But higher potency and a higher tolerance to stress. I think soma is the only one or one of the few that still back cross.
