Making your own soil.

Hello mates, after much research on soils and supersoils and mixes I have come to realize I must make my own soil to cut costs and to k ow what I am getting. Does anyone k ow a good soil mix that is simple. I know subcool has one among others but I want some experience on the simple soil mix. My nutes ate general hydroponics so mainly just need a good soil mix with perlite peat moss lime earth worm castings sand. Any help is good.

Here's what I mix up. Roughly equal parts of a cheap potting soil (Earthgro) with no time release nutes, plain perlite, plain vermiculite, and peat moss. I add in about 2T of dolomite lime per gallon of soil mix. If you can find a good source of big bags of perlite and vermiculite, it is dirt cheap. Pun intended....

After trying a bunch of soils im not really happy with any store bought brand so far. Ive tried a few including popular name brands such as fox farm happy frog and ocean forest, which are supposed to be one of the best.

Are there any better soils or what op said u have to make your own. Im also open to hear others own soil mix concoctions.

If using nutes no need for ewc and all the organic.ammendments. add some lime or.oyster shell flour To helplay buffer the soil to a more neutral Phave and just use your Synthetics. Fox farm has nutes in it so start tbere cut it with perlite hydrogen or equivalent for aeration and go with it

My mix is this.
50% peat moss
25% vermiculite
25% perlite
1 cup of Lime per cubic foot.

Im using bottled dry nutes.

I assume this will work well.
Im not using ewc as I use nutes.

What ever is better, i have a plethora of liquid nutes for soil, so whatever works out the best.

Will look up subcools soil now.

Edit, looked up his soil, im looking for something more thats already done for me to purchase. If worse came to worse i could make my own , but it seems like an awful lot.

Hey Trippyness

I made a soil by following the stonedfree video, but instead of worm castings i used sheep manure and the organic fertilizer had calcium in it and it worked like a charm

These are the base recipes that I've used for a couple of years now.

Veg Mix:
I bag soilless potting mix (1.75 - 2 cubic feet - anything with a peat moss, lime, perlite/vermiculite, & wetting agent mixture. ProMix or Ultimate Potting Mix are my faves.)
3 cups lime
3 - 5 gallons perlite (depending on the potting mix being used, some brands like ProMix come with a decent amount of perlite/vermiculite mixed in already)
I bag worm castings or compost (I've recently been having alot of success with mushroom compost, a much cheaper alternative to EWC)

Flowering Mix:
Same recipe as above but with the following amendments added in:
2 cups blood meal
2 cups kelp meal
2 cups bone meal
4 cups worm castings
2 cups Jamaican bat guano

Bags of ProMix are 4 cubic feet so I'm able to make both of these potting mixes with one bag.

Does this mix give your plants all the nutes they need without deficiencies?Just wondering for future as I am not organic currently

Hmm,,,,you should still use the EWC!
It should be like this for you.

33% EWC
33% Perlite
33% Peat

add to 1 cubic ft of the above

1C Kelp meal
1C Alfalfa meal
1/2 cup Oyster shell (powdered)
1/2 cup Gypsum
1/2 cup Coarsely ground dried egg shell
1/4 cup Glacial Rock dust or Soft Rock Phosphate

This is a VERY base soil with very LITTLE lasting NPK value......It will provide the living bio's you so badly NEED and are lacking in your formula!
I warn you that if you skip the second part......You will have way to many problems that you will not be able to control...
You MUST use your 3 part with this formula like this
Water - Feed - water - feed - etc.....

You NEED the EWC ,, don't leave it out!

Then dolomite lime your soIL and run the bottles. If babies get fox farm or equivalent soil cut it with top soil to not burn babies add aeration like I stated above
