This is my first time growing from bag seed. Going on almost 8 week's my large plant is still shy to show gender. They were planted days apart and the little one already has pistils hut the big one isnt showing clear enough. I'm almost definet that it's a female because a male should have shown gender by now I would think. Today I noticed whatlooks like the stard of female pre flowers but I'm not sure if they could still turn to pollen sacs. opinions?

Well I like to learn as much as I can. All I can do is wait of course but I'd like to develop an eye for early detection so I don't have to risk my females being fertilized in the future.

You are right, but let me tell you males are easy to find plenty early. The pollen sacs will grow downward and wont have any pistils coming out. They have stripes where the flower will break open. You should familiarize yourself with preventing and spotting hermies. They are much more tricky and will teach you much more about proper growing techniques. They can also ruin an entire crop, as opposed to a male which shouldnt even be there in the first place. Light leaks would be the first thing to look at.

Ok yea. So based off what you said don't you think that's a calyx on either side of the node? I don't see pistils yet but I think its a calyx. I think it's possible to tell right now. Yea I've learned a little about hermies. Again I think a male or even a hermie would have shown pollen sacs growing downwards

Like I said, its too early. You just topped it so there is going to be stalks coming out of that node too. Give it time, and honestly, the little guy you say is growing pistils is too small. Usually my seed plants will grow pistils on the 4th node when it has about 6 total nodes. This is part of the reason I mentioned light leaks or light stress. From your picture I can see snow outside, and unless you are supplementing with artificial light, winter lighting will set a plant to flower. Just something to think about.

Ok thankyou! . I figured that's why the little one was flowering so early but I'm so confused about the big one. It was planted 2 days after the little one, and it just shot out of the ground and passed up the other. I t hought they were the same strain but maybe not. The reason their together is I'm just growing for my own personal learning and enjoyment. Not out to fill a 10lb order. Im using bag seed so I planned on at least one of them being a male anyways. I'm growing for absolutely free besides a little plant food. I'm not trying to win the cannabis cup. They are in that container because it's all that would fit on my window sill some what discretely.

No problem man. I would recommend getting a compact florescent bulb from a grow store and cheap timer. Put the bulb in a lamp pointed at the plant and make sure it gets 18 hours of light. I will tell you the stress from doing this now after it has started to flower is exactly the kind of thing that will make a plant hermie if you dont let it go back to veg for long enough. Next time, there is always next time.

Yea sadly that's not an option at the moment. But is a plan for the future. So I'm trying to learn what I can now. if they turn to hermies I'll make them into hash

You can make just about any plant hermie with enough stress. Some genetics that are less diverse will hermie easier though, and maybe even every time.

I understand that. What I'm asking is are hermie seeds likely to become hermies also via passed on genetic information ? .meaning will hermie seeds become hermie regardless of environment?

I suppose that's open for debate, as for every hermed plant there is always some factor of stress to be taken into consideration. In theory, yes, a hermied gene is a hermied gene, and it reflects a weakness in said gene. That is not the worry unless it happens repeatedly. I run some strains that hermie from a crack of light coming from the door, but they are killer when you grow them right, and so I do. I just assume any plant can and will hermie, so I grow always with low stress being at the forefront of any decision I make.

You're saying hermies are killer when you grow them right? How so? Can you still get a lot of thc from them?

I'm not saying EVERY seed from a hermied plant will hermie but I don't like the idea of growing a seed for 4_6 weeks just to find out its hermied on me or not I prefer to stay safe with good seed company's with GOOD genetics......
