Marijuana legalization in Canada has suffered a horrible defeat tonight.

The Federal election isn't quite finished jsut yet, but as it stands, the Conservative Party will at the very least hold a very near majority government and likely hold an actual majority government.

Stephen Harper being the leader of the conservatives and the biggest anti-marijuana figure in recent Canadian history. With him holding a majority government, his anti-marijuana laws WILL be passed.

This is a sad sad day in Canada for pro-marijuana supporters, and we were so close to legalization, so very close...

It's official now, Harper has a majority government, and it's not even close, he doesn't even need 100% support from his party to pass his laws.

For those who are not aware, though I imagine most Canadian posters here would be aware, Stephen Harper has actively pursued the passing of laws that further criminalize the production, possession and distribution of dangerous drugs.

The problem comes from the inclusion of marijuana, a completely safe substance, in these laws, being bunched together as being as dangerous as heroine, cocaine, and other drugs. These laws have been represented by a number of bills which have been repeatedly struck down due to Stephen Harper not holding a majority government.

The bills tend to start out brutally harsh and become tamer and tamer as time goes on since the opposition comes from how harsh the bills are. In it's tamest form, it proposed mandatory 6 month prison sentences for anybody caught growing 4 or more marijuana plants (Not so bad to the casual grower)...and 6 month mandatory prison sentences for being caught with marijuana in any place a youth might frequent, that is to say, EVERYWHERE.
