MH has a better spectrum for veg, but you can run straight HPS is you wish. No rules against that  Check the Indoor forum for more information. :bigjoint:

Considering you plan to use a 600 for flower, I'm guessing you have maybe 6 plants to veg then see which is female

You could veg in a variety of supplemental lighting ways- 4ft ~6500 HOT5s or 4ft ~ 5000-6000 LED tubes. I have both, but moving away from HOT5 and fluorescents in general, due to less than advertised bulb life expectancy, and need for hazardous disposal due to mercury vapors

A 4ft 2 bulb T8 shop light, retrofitted for LEDs is ~ $20 and the LEDs can be gotten for ~ $35+ shipping, minimum order $100. You can easily veg 10 plants under it. See my thread for website and product details. This would last for 10+ years if only used to veg, but you can also use it (warm whites) to supplement your 600.

FYI there are several ~ 400w led lights available that will replace a 600- Apache Tech and Area 51 come to mind, both with proven grows on RIU

If you are not worried about wasting re$ource$ that will be fine for a few hardy plants.. keep it a blowin and as low as possible.. They will do the rest.

You could go CFL even for vegging if you are only talking a few plants.. even using 600 watt 6500k cfl .. uses the same wattage, but I bet you would be happier with your leaves and overall greenery as the CFL's in that range make new plants LUSH..

Just one thought from the peanut gallery/

What I mean is, the bluish CFL (keeping them low and LST or the likes) seem to encourage MANY growth sites.. while the HPS tends to encourage mostly tops. Almost a nuance, but try it with at least a plant, what do you have to lose, you'll see a certain difference vegging under a good application of 6500k cfl over strait sodium.. even high watt sodium..

One addendum, under the CFL takes a few days longer, but I find the results well worth it.. a few days longer for a way more productive plant.. way more productive. In my silly anecdotal experience anyway. everyone else's own mileage may vary.
