a lot of the hip hop fools push the crack/coke a lot. glorify the shit out of it. nice little bit of propaganda for the ones who profit off major drug sales.

ya know come to think of it, you only heard about heroin or that boy in songs from the 90's if they were talking bad about it... lately they've even glorified heroin. hmmmm i wonder why.........

so eminem has 4 songs in the billboard top 20 at the moment.

first person to do it since the Beatles.

others have done it with songs they were featured on but not with 4 songs they are the lead on like eminem's current lineup.

thats pretty intense!

Em's featuring on other's top tracks is historical as well.

Good hip hop music and billboard charts just don't go together.

Its going to be tough for Em to share the hip hop charts throne with Miley Cyrus...

in 1991 maybe but hip hop has gone widespread many many years ago. if eminem can make more money and be more popular then miley cyrus with hip hop then more power to them. the teeny-young adult miley cyrus crowd is HUGE. those are some odds to overcome.

its been discussed many times how the billboard actually works.

"As we wrote in January when YouTube data was added to the Hot 100's equation: "Generally speaking, our Hot 100 formula targets a ratio of sales (35-45%), airplay (30-40%) and streaming (20-30%)."
Of course, that's an overall target for 100 songs each week. That mark can change week-to-week. This week, though, the Hot 100 breaks down in line with the formula's intent: sales, 39%; airplay, 34%; and, streaming, 27%.
And, week-to-week, some songs show largely along those percentages, while others skew noticeably toward any of the chart's three metrics."

it seems they can change the perimeters behind the charts for whatever reason? so its definitely not a perfect system and motive can play a big part BUT it is loosely based on sales and airplay most of all and like i said if eminem can outshine fucking miley cyrus then good on him!

idk how old you are but where I'm from when ole billy wrote achey breakey heart you literally could drive through town and hear someone singing it, miley is destined to be a popular artist. thats some serious competition that Em is hanging with. should make you feel good!

I have a small problem with "underground". If its good shit and alot of people like it its no longer underground. Macklemore was underground when he put out thrift shop and by doing nothing other than being heard he's now referred to as pop. once you're popular you're not underground? that's just the take most people who say underground to me have on underground. I like independent-think it says the same thing most are trying to say with underground. Anyone see Ice T's history of rap? Been looking for it on amazon stream and netflix and shit with no luck.

russel simmons was underground at one point, and still is deep down inside. the difference between underground and mainstream is motive and execution. if a team of writers sit down with key words and write a song with the intention of making $$$$ off it no matter who sings it, thats mainstream. underground has a more honest approach. a couple of joes and beat and an idea. just bouncing shit around and making things that FEEL good. not making things that you know will sell you albums.

Intent is what truly divides underground/mainstream imo. when you start pandering you've crossed over into the mainstream. when you keep it real and just make shit because its good then its still pure.

There are plenty of underground artists that have huge followings that i don't think will ever change no matter how big their fan base is. Artists like Atmosphere, Pharoahe Monch, R.A., Immortal Technique, 7L & Esoteric, Chino XL, Mos Def and Talib Kweli are all legends and have millions of fans world wide and will always be underground. The difference between underground/independent and mainstream/pop artists is not really a popularity issue in my opinion, its an issue of corporations and mass marketing pushing artists to conform to make a marketable style of music above what the personal artist has to offer.

Ice T's documentary is actually called Something From Nothing: The Art of Rap. I have it on DVD and think its great!

Since this is an Eminem thread, here's my favorite Eminem song. Its from a mixtape called Soundbombing II, if you don't have this album you need to get it!
