could i be onto something ya think, about ditching glass jars for tins?

I have 4 of the biggest ones. I kept them in a garbage bag because they weren't airtight. I only use one of them now, which holds cat food.

you saying they dont seal properly, faaark back to to the milo tins

i just pulled a rare dankness hydro grow, put all the good stuff in mason jars in the dark cubbord, but occasionally they came out for burping etc

and some ok looking lower buds went in to the big tins i had im smoking the tin stuff now its fire, the bigger buds in the mason jars are ok just lost color a bit

I am thinking opening jars after drying is more of an issue than minor exposure to light
Leaking seals also cause discoloration regardless of light levels
I keep my jars in a curtained room which is only truly dark at night
We have entered the room to do various functions and regularly our weed stays the same color with great nose unless a jar seal is leaking then the weed yellows and loses smell a bit
I replace my lids and rings regularly
Even the rings can cause leaking if any corrosion is present
Stop the burp and your weed if properly dried will smell as good as the day you jarred it
You may be jarring prematurely

I've just started trying out Grove bags and so far, I think the results are superior to glass jars. I've been searching for ways of long(er) term storage for my weed because I just don't use that much anymore. If I don't use it in a year, then I usually press whatever I have left into rosin. The C vaults are cool....I think someone once linked place that makes the same type of storage containers -commonly used in the food industry in Japan.

I got a couple of those really dark violet glass containers years ago...seemed to work okay....

One nice thing about Mason jars is that you can vacuum out the air and store them that way. Less air = less oxygen = less oxidation.

I've also kicked around the idea of putting a very small chip of dry ice into a storage jar (or bag) -just enough and not too much to make it explode! I know the food industry uses nir=trogen gas to fill up bags so that stuff doesn't get stale...but I don't know exactly how to do it.

For sure better technology exists than mason jars to store our goods long term. It’s just they are cheap and readily available and the other options are more expensive at the moment for not that much more mileage imho. For sure this is to change in the future.

allways keep them in the dark, i used to leave them on a window sill, but left some in a draw, noticed the ones kept in the dark draw were so much nicer to smell and smoke

I buy my jars in boxes, a dozen at a time. Get the amber colored jars if you can find them, and store your jars of bud in the box, in a cool dark place (think great grandma’s root cellar). Toss a silica packet and an oxygen absorber in there, and you should be good.
