Matanuska Thunderfuck from Dr Greenthumb

My first ever grow I got a bagseed from a buddy from Oregon and it turned out to be matanuska thunderfuck. She grew very well despite noob mistakes and the smoke was incredible. Unfortunately, all my clones died and I stopped growing for a while. Now I'm back and considering throwing down the $150 on Greenthumb's matanuska.

Anyone have experience with this strain from the doc?

I have Sagarmatha MT as part of a perpetual harvest...The clone mother is 2 plus years old...Can't help you with Dr. Greenthumb recommendation but I would go with what I know if I were spending my $150...My money would go to the Sag folks...On a 1-10 scale the Sag MT (for me) is a 9.75...FWIW

MTF is an OLD strain going back to the 70's at least, and $30 a seed is outrageous excessive.

Too bad you missed the GDP specials that ended last week, buy 10of any of their stock, get 10 Bay11 Sativa free. That's 20 seeds for under a Ben Franklin. Shop around a bit be money wise.

Yeah...By the time shipping & handling is paid the Sag MT is about $20 a bean...I have found that seed price is the least costly part of what I do. Once I have made the pheno selection from usually a 10pk and get the clones going it becomes piece work...It is an old strain but it is on my all time top ten list...FWIW

Yeah, it is an old strain. I love old school strains...and MTF is by far one of my favorites. $30 for a fem bean is pricey, but if the genetics are real MTF im down.

Wow...$30 a bean!!! I checked the Dr Greenthumb site and also noted that their variety is listed as sativa dominant...That is definitely not what I am growing from Sag. My girls are very indica...FWIW

Are you growing indoor? just get the G13 and be done with it, you wont regret it. At 100 a seed it hardly matters if your going to clone, I have got over 400-500 clones so far off 1 fem seed.

I believe the MT from Sag was a MTF crossed with something else, but I'm not positive. I do know the MTF I had was definitely sativa dominant.

BUDS, I am growing indoor and the G13 does look mighty tempting. I'm partial to MTF so I'll most likely go that route...and clone the shit out of her...but G13 is certainly a possibility for the future.

sullivan, Best wishes on your grow...Just reading about Dr Green's MTF and she sounds challenging indoors...Meaning that she wants to be a big girl and you could be wrestling an octopus...Sag's MT requires a good deal of space, bondage and maintenance for an indica but worth it...I have mine in seven gallon smarties...FWIW

Thanks! I'm definitely interested in the MT from Sag, but I think for now I'm gonna try the docs. I was scared my first one was gonna stretch right into the HPS, but luckily stayed just enough below it. This time I'm definitely going to do some topping and probably SCROG to avoid things getting to tall. I've been using 7 gal smarts as well, but after reading up on the ROLS/no-till method which I'm currently using (great thread if you grow organically: https://www.rollitup.org/organics/636057-recycled-organic-living-soil-rols.html ) I'm upgrading to 10 gals. When I do the MTF I'll prolly go 15.

Thanx for the heads up on "ROLS" thread will check it out...I am a practitioner of recycled living soil though I do supplement feed based on what I think the plant is trying to tell me...I am limited to a 3x3 veg tent and a 5x5 flower tent so I can comfortably only handle 6 seven gallon smarts in flower at a time and shoot for a plant harvest every two weeks or so...

I have not grown anything from Greenthumb...I remember there being a lot of heated discussion a couple of years ago over his acquisition of G-13 from Jim Ortega...I don't pretend to have an opinion one way or another regarding him or his gear other than he seems to me pricey...But then again ceed price is not the costly part of what I do...FWIW

Docs matanuska is straight fire, as a lot of his gear is, I was skepticle and still am that it's the original matanuska, But its worth checking it out, the potency is up there with very few, I remember feeling like I was dreaming but I was awake, and when I say dreaming I don't mean hallucinating I mean almost like what was going on wasn't real, the shit just gets u retarded, actually it bugged me out a bit but I loved it late at night, as far as getting sagamarthas instead of docs I think that would be a big mistake, I've had sags blueberry and one of ther matanuska crosses and they don't hold a candle to docs gear, so far he has yet to stair me wrong, his ghost og is one of the best ogs I've had and is a exact replica as the cut, same with his trainwreck, ecsd, and chem4, actually the chem 4 and trainwreck were the only two strains I've ever bought that were 10 for 10 with keepers, some phenos a little better then others but all keepers in there own right, and anyone looking for a commercial strain docs chem 4 in dwc or soil for that matter gives absurd yields, I remember messing up a few chem 4's and still plucking 6 z's, and one chem 4 we got 14 z's with 1 1000 in a waterfarm dwc. I didn't like docs oh zone or the dope really but we only had a pack of each, his endless is to date the best shit I've had but it was hard to find that pheno, and she's a bitch, real finicky not for beginners

the difference between the 2 is doc`s is supposedly from the clone only matanuska thunderfuck and sagar is just an indicia from mantanuska valley.

matanuska thunderfuck from greenthumb is a bit of a challenge indoors because it wants to be big. it's amazing smoke though and worth the effort

Yep
I bought Mtf from him last year wasn't impressed for the cost.... I lived in matanuska valley for 12 years and that strain is very elusive even for a local. Would I buy from him again simply put NO! That's the only purchase I've ever made from the doc so with that being said.

Yes, in the late 1970s and 80s there was some strong weed coming out of Alaska's Matanuska valley. Yes, people have things they believe are MTF, and yes people sell things they claim are MTF.

But I don't think its clear that there ever really was a unique strain by that name, or that if there was such a line that it still exists in any kind of "pure" form.

Of course some people do believe that MTF is its own inbred line, a hybrid acclimated to growing in AK, but if that were true, I don't think this would be so scarce or "mythical". Some people think that MTF was just the name given to the best commercially available stuff from that part of Alaska at that time; in other words, it was just something else (or more than one thing at different times) given that name. Some think this was a clone-only cut that's long since gone.

I don't really know the truth here. . .and I don't think anyone else does either. We're talking about weed mythology from Alaska from 30+ years ago.

There is a bunch of recently grown stuff called MTF that was tested out at SC labs ranging from about 15-27% THC, with most of it at around 20-21%. Although 27% THC is pretty darn high (see here: http://www.scanalytical.com/sample-details.html?task=sample&sample=130730V052 ), it seems that at least in terms of commercially grown stuff, the majority of buds going by the name MTF aren't any more potent than any other top shelf weed.

So all that said, personally, I'd be pretty reluctant to shell out astronomical amounts of money chasing what amounts to a ghost story. Even stipulating that what Dr. Greenthumb sells is excellent, and that its real (which is legitimately questionable, I think), there are a *LOT* of great genetics out there nowadays, most of which cost way less than his asking price.

My understanding of MTF is that it was held by hells angels up there very close. Back in 2007 a sample I received came from someone who had a connection with a biker in Alaska. It was said to be a true cut of MTF and it was sativa in appearence and not a huge yielder. The indica strain called kodiak gold was the indica dominant strain some called mtf but it was not. Even reeferman's version was from kodiak island and was not the true mtf. The hybrid indica from the dutch seed bank was just that a hybrid. It was not the pure mtf because the pure is a sativa from what I read many years ago and what I sampled. Doc's is a sativa dominant but you don't want that. Not until I get it first. All I can say is it was fire and a great effect. Hope his lives up to the ledgend. There is a thread about the real MTF on here somewhere if you search. % of thc does not make a great strain as most can attest. But the effect. It is a clear, clean high and a pleasure to smoke.
Hope that helps.

Here's that thread.
