Are you going to do an experiment with the IR flower boosting? I'm interested in whether it will cause stretching. I already have more stretch than I would like and it's with 4000k spectrum and 50w per sq ft. I certainly wouldn't go to 3000k when I get this much stretch from 4000. The higher color temp LEDs are also more efficient. I doubt if the extra red in warm white would compensate for the reduced efficiency, and produce similar or higher yields or better quality, just my speculation. The difference in efficiency is something like 10-15% if I recall. I know it's significant whatever it is.

Looking great man! Regarding LED cola size in photos/film, I have noticed that pictures of my favorite ladies grown under HPS at first glance look more impressive than when they are LED grown, same exact cuttings compared. The frosting, flavor and potency are noticeably improved under LED and when I look back at the HPS yield and gpw numbers they were abysmal. I think it has a lot to do with bud density and I prefer many small nugs over larger colas because there is less self shading. That is going to be an important issue for us trying to get the info out there, we are going to have to get used to what COB nugs look like LOL.

This HPS grow looks impressive to the untrained eye yet yielded .57 gpw and yield tent was less than I am getting today with COBs in the same tents. Bud quality was questionable compared to the LED buds.
Mandala - 8 Miles High, HPS grown looks impressive but weighed in at 68.9g
TGA - Qleaner HPS grown, yielded 83.3g

I have read comments about smaller buds from cobs, but having never flowered under cobs before I didnt know about the difference in density.
It makes sense that the HPS higher temps cause looser buds.

Hey everybody,newb here and i am getting very inspired (GrowMau5 especially) to try building an led light. I dont want to go too crazy,just in case things dont work out. So im def working on a budget. I'm thinking of trying small before i go "BIG". What do y'all think about running (2) cxb3070 3500k in series on a 21" heatsink ran by an ELG100-c1400? Do I need anything else major? i have thermal paste,so can i get away with this and soldering the leds to heatsink w/o connectors? im not worried about a lens either unless absolutley needed. Like i said ,this is just a project to see if i can go "BIG" later on. Any help would be greatly appreciated. i also need pointers on wiring up power to the wall

hey brother, welcome to the diy community. elg100-c1400 will run exactly 2 cxb's. great choice and utilization of the driver. here is a down and dirty wiring diagram, just subtract 2 cobs obviously. and disregard the cob holder model #

seems like you could easily tape down the holders too, to avoid soldering

I tried that, but holders hold the cobs slightly away from hs until screwed down

ah, i see. i figured you could tape right over the screw holes and maybe get sufficient downward force. idk, i just drill the holes, hah.

I also have a spydr600 that i would like to make into 3 seperate 2 bar systems with dimming capabilities, could you offer any suggestions on how to go about doing it.

I dont have the tools to use the holders. I used kapton and soldered the leads, works great so far

Some PC cords use 18 gauge conductors, it will be hard to read but will say the wire gauge on the jacket. Depending how many drivers you are going to run off that cable, may be worth using something beefier. For AC power wiring on and around my driver boards I have been using HUSKY 300V 14/3 extension cord cable. Nice quality flexible jacket and cheap $0.50/ft, just cut to length you need and you can wire it into power boxes or add plug ends.
For the record I am not an electrician and when working on AC power you should consult an electrician to make sure your design is safe. They would probably recommend romex but if the cable is going to be flexed often you probably want to use stranded cable.

Ummm..... why would anyone build a $1000+ light and then use TAPE to hold the COB on?? I'd personally be really pissed if I found a couple COBs dangling below the heatsink with the smoke let out.........
