400w MH lamp for vegging right now, and noticed they dont grow up... they grow out....

Used a HPS and they started to stretch up, went back to MH, they stopped growing up and started getting wide again.

Does anyone specifically use MH to save space?

Bushing out is a good sign that the plant is healthy. If you want them to grow taller, stick with the MH and cut off the first layer or 2 of bottom branches and it will put more energy into growing taller. Inversely, if you trim the top, they will fill out more

This is the whole reason why MH is the "Classic" veg light. And why "Mixed Spectrum" or "Ceramic Metal Halide" bulbs offer "The best of both worlds".

An abundance of blue spectrum (found in MH & CMH) keeps the internodal length down to a minimum, making the plant "Short and Fat".
