MH and HPS lighting combined

Just Curious, I'm a newbie and have a question about lighting. Is it OK to use both metal halide and high pressure sodium lights at the same time to grow? If so, what would be expected of plant growth and budding? If not, why? What are the pro and cons between keeping them separated or together? I have a 400 watt hps and a 400 watt MH with limited grow space. only 5'hx15'Lx3'w. wondering what my best set up would be. Thanks for any help!

For the last several years, growers have been demanding redder burning halides and bluer burning sodium's and paying huge premiums for nominal amounts of color improvement. The only way to truly get full-spectrum plant lighting is to blend the blue spectrum of a metal halide lamp with the red spectrum of a high-pressure sodium lamp. When this is done, the spectrum of the fixture is unparalleled by any single lamp source.

Statement above - True Or False when it come to growing marijuana?

I don't know about that, but your buds need the red spectrum to simulate fall. Blue is more for vegging!

As long as you have enough lumens of HPS light to properly flower then having the MH is not going to hurt anything... except the temp in your grow space.

Thanks for the input. I think I will keep them separate. Run MH for just vegging and the hps for flowering.

Well. i have done extended reserch. also reading some books, anyway the conclution was that you can use either lights but if you combine the 2 spectrums than you will have a much bigger chance at a larger harvest

Hold up bro. Use both. You will be happy. I have a buddy that has been growing as long as me but more consistant. He used to use 2 hps lights in his garden. Now he uses one hps and one mh. He was telling me how much less the plants stretched when he uses the combo. I would deffenitly use both lights. If not for the spectrum atleast for the lumens.

Check it out dude. My setup, small closet one big plant. I used tying and training to grow the bud arms out to one side of the plant (the right side). Then I aimed my 400w hps and 400w mh at her. The hps is on top over the cola, and the mh is angled right into the spot where all my secondary bud arms are growing.

Wow, great responses here on my subject. Thanks for the pic on your set up using both lights. Gives me a good feeling of assurance that using both works fine together. I may switch to using both at the same time now. Anyone else have a set up with both lights? Pics? Thanks again for all your support!

well in my opinion and from what i have been readin over the past many years the second light may help but it will also raise the heat considerably and the actuall return in harvest weight may not be worth double the electric bill, for a small garden. but a 400 w is only rated to adequately light 16 to 20 sq ft and u have 45 sqft so i would recomend u get u a hps conversion bulb for that mh ballast and hang the lights 1/3 the way in from each end.

Has anyone ever used a 250w MH w/ a 150w HPS? I have a 3'x3' area and from what I've read, 400w is perfect for that space. I already have the 250w light and I'm just debating wheather or not I should get a small HPS lamp to put in there as well. A friend of mine recently told me that MH lights produce more crystals, just not as dense buds so mixing them was the way to go. I don't really know how reliable that is, but it sounds interesting.

get that hps, and your lighting will be awesome. Plants use red and blue spectrum of light. With that combination you should have some pretty good plant growth in veg and flower stages.
Good Growing:peace:

hey this is both my first comment on any thing like this and my first grow !! i am growing my plants under 400w mh and 250 hps !
i started off in veg with my 400w until the plant grew to 3 and a half foot tall then when i put into flowering i added my 250 hps !
i am currently 2 weeks aprox into flowering and think my plant is looking real well !
i amm allso growing a clone using the low stress traing method (lst)
