mh is fine
burns hotter
makes more trichs smaller buds
more likely to damage plants at close range during flower

i use 1000 watters - my hps in flower are anywhere from 2-3 to 1-13 inches from my canopy
my mh is at LEAST 20 inches - more like 2 good feet

Invest in a digital ballast so you can get yourself a HPS bulb for flower. I've seen OK harvests from MH, but full HPS or a mix of the two is much better.
But, you can use MH all the way through the grow if that's all you got.

I don't know any brands of MH that have much or any of a red spectrum.

You can always look into "conversion" bulbs...they are meant to work in an MH outlet but emit a more reddish and balanced spectrum of light more similar to an hps.
