Nice grow you got going there I have some Urkel , Maui Waui x Tutty Fruity, and Matsu Thunder Fuck x Afgooey in my cfl cab but I'm in soil been thinking of going dwc soon keep up the good work

Hey Zen!
I have been thinking about a "coil" pipe for the roots to grow in...
Kinda like Bose uses a "maze" to make their speakers "long enough" for the longer wave length of the bass tones...
But I am thinking a spiral would work better...
So even if you keep the res. small, you would have that much more length for your roots to grow, and if you keep a constant flow of water, the roots will be nice and organized downstream, instead of forming a rootball...
Conditioner for your roots????? LOL !!!
But seriously, I think there is something to be explored there....
Can you even picture what I am talking about...? or am I just crazy and should report to the looney bin?????... LOL !!!
Bubbles and flowing current combined... with lots of room for the roots to stretch... hummmm.....

i understand roughly what you mean as far as bubbles and a coil go but what would be the flowing current in a dwc or have i missed a future mod wolfman is going to do. and no your not crazy it sounds like a very interesting idea.

I just meant that if you keep the water constantly flowing in the same direction, while it is being bubbled, there might be some benefit as well as having more room for the roots...
So the water would be introduced at the base of the plant and follow the spiral until it comes out the end...

i see what you mean (i think), like the aerogarden sort of does. i've read a few things similar to the coil idea but using a stocking so you could train the roots and stop each plants root system from tangling. i haven't actually seen it done tho and i think the roots would end up going thru the stocking. the best idea i can think of is to use plastic sleeves to train the roots, i.e keep adding a little section of sleeve as and when the roots require it. keeping in mind that you would need to leave decent lengths between sleeves to allow the roots access to the medium. what do you think?
you have to get plenty of water and air movement inside those sleeves. it would isolate the roots from all the "good stuff" in the rest of the res. maybe something like a top drip method constantly moving water into the sleeve.
if you don't ever have to move your plants, I don't see where tangling would be a problem. they do in the wild, so should be fine.

As far as currents in a dwc rez are concerned, I get really a really good flow in my tubs.
The bubbles come up the middle, disperse outwards to the walls and then the water flows down and back over to the airstone.
I guess you could say it is like a dual-convection reservoir because of the placement of the airstones.
Aha! I just realized it! Having your airstone parallel with the walls of the tub creates this effect! I use to have my stones at a diagonal and the convection didn't happen.
So...
Keep your airstones parallel to the reservoir tubs guys!

I do this in my ebb and flow res. right now, I have a 4 inch air stone in the side of a 5 gallon bucket. it circulates the water so well, you can see the surface flow from it. keeps everything stirred up pretty well for not having a separate pump.

What I as thinking was how to get a 6 foot root in a 3 foot space...
Everything else came into play to make that idea work...
The flow would be required if you used a tube... but the airstone could be just in the res....
Although It would be even better to figure a way to make bubbles inside of the tube as well...

Wow guys... You are all getting creative on me... I like that =]
I was going to do a single rez... but individual rez's was simple and make it easy to custom feed the girls.. in case I want to experiment.. and you know I will.. lol.. Of course for anybody planing out a cab grow.. you can get as simple or as complex as you want... just make it fun.
Coils, tubes, screens... lol.. I love it all.. and yes I get what you guys are talking about.. it's all great... so far these small tubs seem to hold enough fluid for what I need them and the air-stone moves the water enough nicely...
Using a coil.. or tube to train the roots is an awesome idea... putting a small air stone at the bottom of the coil/tube and have the bubbles travel upwards will not only give you circulation but excellent oxygenation... I love it =]

I put the screen back on for the top chamber...
I'm also experimenting with LST in the lower chamber... I gave my girls bling bling ... I'm using paperclips loaded with washers for weight...
The strategy is simple... weigh down the branches so they separate, and keep them from touching the lights... but keep them high enough so they get plenty of light.
Now for some cana-porn =]

Someday i hope... nice plants bro. you could build a cylnder around the cup holding the roots or maybe a soft netting or sock so the roots will grow in the netting and having a bubble stone in the net. you could move it around the tub as you need just a thought.

Not a lot of time today.. so just a quick update...
The girls are doing great... both the scrog, and "bling bling lst" seem to be working well.. lots of new bud sights... veg growth has just about completely stopped.. but bud sites keep getting bigger.
I decided to give all but 2 of my clones away, since they were so big...
here are a few on their way to their new home... 3 are going in buckets to a friend in need..
..and 3 are going to another friend's garden.. her boyfriend has glaucoma and this will be a nice surprise for him since he has always wanted to grow his own meds... I just hope we got them out in time to flower outside.
I kept 2 for clone mothers.... the smallest which was being shadowed by the rest in the very back row.. she is from Wind..... and one from Esperansa.
Gobears... just to send some positive vibes your way and give you a little encouragement to not give up... That little girl's name is now "Gobears" legacy of Wind"... if this little plant can make it... so can you my friend. Hope she gives you good karma =]
