Do they just want more for the same? What are they offering me as the employer?
If I'm not making more, then they definitely wont be making more. They have to do more than just show up, they have to help improve the business, not just keep it from burning down that day. My crew is constantly on the up and up with their pay because we are a growing business and they continue to improve their skills.
How many burger flippers do you know that attend burger flipping conferences and invest their own time into bettering themselves so they can approach their boss and say "Hey man, look what I can do, and you can have all this and a bag of chips if you pay me more" and any boss with any business smarts at all is going to look at this employee, know that they have great potential for improving the business, and give them the increase in pay they deserve, and continue to do so for many years.

An air traffic controller doesn't do his job correctly, people die, he goes to jail. A food service worker doesn't do his job correctly, people die, no one goes to jail and government does a tomato ban. I'll concede minimum wage workers get a living wage if they go to jail for not washing their hands.
I've never flipped burgers, but I imagine hours on end on top of a very hot stove is fairly unpleasant.

You ask this question as though you think folks knowing I made sandwiches for a few months would embarrass me. If that were the case I wouldn't have mentioned on a public forum that I made sandwiches for a few months.
So the only two options are to either force it out of the employers hand, or force it from the tax payers hand?
And buck, it isn't bootstrapping up, its simply just dropping entitlement filters out of a persons skull and getting them to realize they don't need someone to hold their hand through life. Aside from the mentally and physically incapable, everyone is capable of thriving if they want to.
A business does not care what you call it, what color you are or what a single belief you have in your skull. The business is you, and it will become what you make of it. Why more aren't jumping at this is just beyond me. But then again, with their hands out and those supporting their desires to just get paid more over becoming more, its no wonder so few are willing to put forth the effort to become something better in life, or bootstrap themselves up as buck so calls it.
Why can't the "minimum wage" worker pay for it in time, the way it should be? And in their time, if they aren't doing something to better themselves by either creating their own ventures or bettering the current business they work for and receiving compensation, then they will be at that shit job forever and its no one's fault but their own.

you do know that burger flippers aren't the only ones getting paid minimum wage. And you aren't talking about a starting wage, what you describe is called a raise, and I agree with you ,no one should get raises for doing nothing more or less than his counterpart, but how many times have you seen it happen?

That would be the youth of this nation who have not yet made their way in life, or those who are in between jobs/career ventures.
That would be worse than what we are currently doing.

And then tell me what job this person is doing, and then that starting wage can be discussed based on many other factors. (rhetorical)
Minimum wage is why so many skilled workers are under paid, it sets a standard of how little an employer can pay them. If employers had to compete for employees in the same way employees compete for work, I think we could narrow down on underpaid workers in this country.
Even then, flipping burgers wont earn you a living wage.
I had to re-enter the workforce after getting clean. Can't usually land a good job after you've not had one for most of a year. To compound things, the two previous years saw me drop out of law school and lose a few jobs for nodding out at work.
Companies weren't lining up to name me CEO. So I did what everyone in fast food should do. Give it 100% and use it to demonstrate you are employable. Franchise owners often own other busineses, or know people who do.
My hard work was noticed, and the guy that owned the subway I was at gave me an awesome opportunity.

there is NO WAY you could get 21% of your wage deducted for taxes at 7.25 an hour you hopped out wasteoid.
even if you listed ZERO dependants on your w-4 the withholding doesnt even approach that %, and for fucks sake you will be getting it all back at the end of the year PLUS the EIC, and yes, if youre making 7.25 you DO qualify for Medicaid, at least in most places. in california you can qualify for medicaid all the way up to like 9.75/hour even if you dont have kids.

There are so many different variables. Even if you make the right decisions you are not guaranteed to have a good job.
I went to college got a degree out of high school. I was employed by the same company for 4 years.
I worked hard everyday, yet I never got a fulltime position. Even when I was promoted from a floor clerk to a supervisor.
I started at 7.25 and after 4 years I was only making 8.45 an hour. Even If I worked there for 10 more years I probably wouldn't have gotten full time.
Seniority plays a larger role in advancement than work ethic and why would I continue to work the same job if I had advanced as far as I could.
There just aren't enough good jobs even for the hard working college educated people. I know many people who have college degrees who cannot find employment in their related field.
I was always told growing up, go to college work hard and it will be worth it. Sounds like sham to me.
