do the hand test(one of many you will learn..). pick up the pot just after you've watered it, remember this weight. pick up the pot when you think it needs water, if its lite then it needs water.

I believe the old adage is if you dig your finger an inch deep into the soil, it will be either wet or not. Go from there. Personally, I like to let mine get bone dry so they push all the nutes they can. I water weekly at most. Also, be careful with Miracle Grow because a lot of it is time-release which can fuck you over in the end.

lol you must be high

you pick up the pot before you water it, remember the weight, then water it and if you think it needs watering pick it up and see if its close to how it weighed before the last watering

like others have suggested, eventually you will be able to judge just from the weight of the pot
but watering everyday is probably a bad idea, but much depends on your soil mix - some mixes dry out a lot quicker than others - temp/humidity affects how fast your soil will dry
but normally, watering every 3 days is plenty

Alot depends on pot size too.
6" pots in SOG are going to need watered more often than deep 10" pots. Airflow and humidity levels will influence this also.

Go pick up a combo moisture/light/ph meter (less than $10 at any hardware or gardening store). It's foolproof =)

You should be watering your plants twice per week, at the most. Mine are in 3 gallon pots and they drink 2/3 cups of water about every 4 days, 5 days if it's humid out. Unless your plants are in really small pots (or are really big plants and you're giving them a tiny drink) there's NO WAY you need to water every other day.

i use 6 inch 1/2 gallon pots, i water every other day and fertalize every other watering.

unless your in extremely large pots (like 5 gallons....) you need to make sure that the rootmass doesn't dry right out and stunt growth, but you also have to watch for over watering and rotting the roots.

with smaller pots, just watch the soil line slowly pull away from the pot. when the pot is lite, you water it. (peat and coco hold up to 9x their own weight in water).

6" is a really small pot, which I covered in my previous post.

"Unless your plants are in really small pots (or are really big plants and you're giving them a tiny drink) there's NO WAY you need to water every other day."

In six inch pots, you will need to water more frequently, just make sure the soil is completely dry all the way to the bottom of the pot before you water again. Feeding every other day is eventually going to cause salt buildup in the soil, which will result in nutrient lock-out (the plant won't be able to absorb any nutrients, even though the soil is full of them).

Bigger pots mean less frequent watering, which in turn means less likelihood of severe salt buildup and less chance of overwatering.

Flushing the soil regularly is a good idea if you're going to continue with the every other day feedings.

Couldn't find one on the Home Depot website, but that doesn't mean your local store doesn't have them.
i thought you meant something that was reliable.

in my personal experiance. those meters dont read PH worth a shit, or light for that matter.
i wouldn't WASTE $10 on that, because of the false readings.

after doing all the reaserch i have on PH testers, i've come to believe if you want accurate readings, you have to pay for them.
or do manual tests (soil+water+chemical, shake, wait for color......)

The OP needs a MOISTURE meter, this is the cheapest one, it just happens to be a combo ph/light meter also. It isn't unreliable. You stick it in the soil, if it's wet it reads "wet", if it's dry it reads "dry". Pretty simple stuff.

Remember, we are talking about watering (moisture), not ph or light. I have that very meter and it works fine for ph and light, though.
