Miracle Grow Perlite?

I'm gonna need some perlite for my next grow. I plan on ordering a good bag off the net when i get some flow. In the meantime, I need a lil extra to start my seeds. A friend has some Miracle Burn perlite I can have. I know that it has some kind of nutes in it. I was wondering if I could possibly soak it out with hot water or some shit? Probably not but it can't hurt to ask, huh? If not, I guess I'll be meticulously sifting through my promix for a lil extra. Ha.

I don't like using it either but the amount of burn is small.
You could prolly soak it in normal water and drain it a few times to be safe.

Are you sure?

I had to buy some from Lowe's a while back [they only sold small ass bags too] but it was plain ole perlite. Should be okay. Miracle Grow soil is a different story.

Just going out on a limb here... But why not just start your seeds in the Pro Mix? That'd work just fine.

I would, but I just got done chopping my entire crop down because the medium was staying over-saturated. I've never had any problems with that before, until this last attempt. There could be a couple different factors contributing to that over-saturation, so I'm not blaming the promix. But it isn't off the hook entirely. I'm just playing it safe and not taking any chances. I don't have the resources to be f-ing up my grows. I'm poor as poor gets... Besides, a little extra wiggle room won't hurt 'em, would it?

Yep. Those are the bags I'm speaking of. They have nutes. A small amount, but I didn't know if/how it would affect me growing organically. I've heard to avoid it, but wanted more input. I am newb to organics.

That^^^^^^

Un amended Pro Mix is fine for seeds and with the small containers used for starting seeds over saturation is no problem.

I get mine sloppy, sloppy wet (saturated), plant the seeds ~1/8-1/4" deep and then don't do anything for a week or so, like add more water. I do this outside in full sun and only very seldom do I need to add water before the week is up. I don't even check them for 4 or 5 days.

Planting seeds is a simple process, don't over complicate it.

I noticed this thread is a month old but eh, hear it goes. I have some miracle grow perlite. Like you, I was concerned that the infused nutes would pose a problem for my tender seedlings. Infused Miracle grow nutes release each time you water so I figured I could rinse them and wash the nutes away. I may very well have been mistaken. I tested soil pH with meter before hand and it read 5.8. I added the washed perlite and the pH dropped to 4.5 and then, even lower for a second then back to 4.5-4.7. Any takes? IO am concerned that since the nutes are infuse rinsing them for extended periods release them?

Since perlite by nature has zero nutrient value, Scott's adds a MINUTE amount of fertilizer to it. It won't burn anything. I used to use it all the time to amend my soil mix. Look at the ratios on the bag, it's hardly anything at all.

NPK of Miracle grow perlite: 0.04 - 0.01 - 0.06

You really think that will harm anything?

That's exactly what I thought. However when using it in soil with ratios as high as 25-35% it did in fact burn a few of my seedlings. I should add that I also used Ocean Forest on some other seedlings with no problems and Ocean Forest is known to be hard on sprouts. I'm going to conclude that using the nute-infused perlite in a high enough ratio will in fact have a similar effect on a "weak" seedling. I say weak, instead of genetically dis-inclined because as I stated, I did have other seedlings who did amazing in both foxfarm and soil with high amounts of scotts infused perlite and it just so happens that the ones that did well were licensed seeds while the others were simply bagseed. bongsmilie

I've used it in all my grows so far with no issues.
I wouldn't think such a small amount of nutes like that would last long into the grow anyway right? So probably just help lightly boost the plant early on if anything.
