Molasses ?

What your opinion on using molasses during bud cycle, I have heard different thoughts would like input from the group, Thanks

It works, use it.

My first grow and I'm using it. I'm satisfied it works. My buds are alot bigger than I expected.

what do you do with the molasses how do you use it?

Most people put about a Tablespoon per gallon of water......I do a bit more than that thooooooo

in hydro its a disaster waiting to happen imho
any sugar in your water gives nasties something to feed on

Always fattens up my buds. I notice an increase in yield about 5-20% at times. I use it 2 tablespoons per gallon of water mixed with my cocktail of nutrients at the beginning of the third week of flowering till the end of the cycle.

I'd imagine that would be like sugar in the injectors of your car. Gum up everything!!! Thats why I don't do hydroponics. Anything more complicated than dirt confuses me!!!


I have been using about 5 tablespoons in 2 gallons of water. Use hot water to mix the molasses, then cool, or slightly warm water for the rest.

I use natures guide horticulture Molassas,2 tbls per gallon.It helps buds swell up in the last 3 weeks IMO.

Does anyone actually know whats in the molasses that helps the bud production? Also does it make your bud taste sweeter?

you do taste the molasses depending on when you stop before flush. some people use with the flush
blackstrap unsuphered molasses is the best. it`s the sugar from the sugar beats that makes it good. there are different types of molasses, depends on the process used.

Has anyone considered using maple syrup or brown sugar?

Its a bit long and in depth but it answers a lot of questions.

i've been useing non sulphated black treacle [it's the same as molasses].my first grow to.i could tell the difference after the first day of useing the stuff all the buds seemed to swell.

Nasties aren't necessarily nasty though.. There are beneficial bacteria/protozoa in the rhizosphere/roots that chelate and prepare/chelate various molecules for uptake..
Extended dark cycles stimulates plants like MJ to dump alot of carb reserves into the rhizosphere.. Late in the cycle these micro-organisms feed on these carbs, and penetrate the intercellular regions of the roots to put the energy to good use for the plant..
Essentially the carb loading from molasses isn't for the plant directly, plants can't uptake complex molecules through the xylem.. You're actually feeding your helper organisms so they can do more good for your plant..
At the concentrations we're talking, that won't gunk anything up, but you can reduce the amount of simpler sugars like sucrose in molasses if you want by mixing molasses with warm water really well, then letting that sit undisturbed for a couple days.. When it settles you will have an amber like liquid up top that contains simple easily fermentable sugars, and in the silt layer will be all the complex stuff.. Honestly though I don't know if thats beneficial here or not.. Distillers use that trick to get higher concentrations of fermentable sugars.. For this though I think the total package may be best..

Its never really going to hurt anything, but 5th week sounds like a good point to start if you don't want it in there when the plant is still capable of doing this work..

you can give it to them every watering, even the final flush if you dont mind the taste of it
