You'll need to run a heater if you plan to grow in a garage that gets near freezing temperatures.

Where are u located? If u run your lights at night u might b able to get away with it. U still need to insulate the garage or heat from lights won't help much. Small propane wall heater 150$ works really well. Cold means really slow growth.

I've been growing in a tent in a garage in cold temperatures for years.
Not freezing cold but air temps in the tent can go down to 12°C - 54 °F at lights out.
Ì also grow in a hut with no heat too.
Ì use leds lights.
Here's a few tips.
Cover the tent with insulation, especially the top, insulate the floor, get a heatmat and put plant pots on it, extract air at the bottom of the tent, have a fan at top of tent blowing warm air downwards, use a fan speed controller for extraction.
My tent extraction is a 12v 80mm PC fan with a manual speed controller. Run the lights at night.
Ì veg in a draughty cold attic too. No fans, no extraction. Just a heatmat.
I've found the most important thing is keeping the soil warm.
Hope that helps.

MoFlow - Greetings! I only have space in my garage for a new winter grow room. My garage has heat, but the garage has to be opened and closed to get the car in and out, the trash, and of course the snow-blower. Should I be worried about "shock" cold during those times? It can get as low as -36F at my location... I plan to elevate off the cement. I am leaning towards a hydroponic system, but I wonder if that would leave the roots "exposed" to the cold shock. Can I ask for your thoughts? Thanks!

I wouldn't let the water temps get lower than 65. Get a fish tank heater and put it in the res if you can't keep water temp above that.
