Moving to California, want to start my own life. Any input is greatly appreciated!

Title says it all really. I'm twenty years old and would like to move to California not just because of the MMJ laws but also because I fell in love with the place when I was there in 2008. I visited a friend's father who lived in the Irvine/Tustin area. Great place, absolutely love it.


I am originally from Europe & lots from California reminded me of Europe which I liked. I also liked how everything was more "alive" over there. There was life outside! Anyway, I currently live somewhere where I did not want to move to but had no other option at the time. I also don't have much family (everyones still in Europe) & don't get along well with my father or his new wife (who just so happen to live near where I live)...

Anyways, I've been dreaming of moving to California for quite some time now. I want to move out there and start my own life without all the bullshit im going through right now with family problems, etc. I have absolutely no idea where to move to. I haven't talked to anybody from California...where do you guys recommend? I am looking to live somewhere that's maximum an hour from the coast...don't care to live in the heart of LA either. I'm kind of a hippie type of guy who likes to live a little outside of the big cities but also not out in the middle of nowhere.

Jobwise, I'm open for anything. I will be looking for a 1 bedroom apartment most likely since I don't have financing available to purchase a house at my age.



I'm open to hear everybody's input on this subject. Really interested in finding at least 5 different spots in California which I can hopefully go visit sometime this year.

I'm from Canada and visited Cali for the first time a couple years ago,,wife and I fell in love with it,,we stayed in Point Arena right on the coast but were not to far from Santa Rosa,,we are done work in about 7 years and are considering a home there for 6 months outta the year,,Santa Rosa is about a half hour or so north of San Fran,,nice lil town but not too little,,very affordable with all amenities,,bout an hour from the coast if your a tourist,,anyway,,going back again in March,,gonna see the more southern end of Cali this time ,,I'm sure there may be better spots and someone from Cali may help you a lil better,,good luck with your journey young man,,don't ever be afraid to make a change in your life and take that first step

Here is the real skinny. You will probably not work near where you live. Most likely in the S Cal Area you will be commuting to work. Look on a map and see how far and how many freeways you would need to use living in any given location. The high desert is pretty close to alot of different things and at this point in the economy probably has some of the cheapest living. commuting to work is a way of life there... just make sure you never have to do more than an hour one way to work.
