Music Distortion...?

I've been smoking since 8th grade, 12th grade now, and when I started smoking, music wad amazing and I could hear sounds, from far away, as if they were up close. But now music sounds good, but not like it used to be, and it seems like the song(s), in general, sound as if it is more distant than when I'm sober and I end up finding myself having to turn up the volume to 4/5th of the volume's maximum.

Before I had "Beats by Dre" but now I have the "Apple's new 6th gen ear buds", is this why the music sounds "wrong"?

Could I get people's input on this?

Music these days tends to be heavily over compressed for perceivable loudness, in order to compete with other commercial releases. Bob Katz is doing some pretty cool things with iTunes and some other people to try to solve this problem in the future. Also shitty quality monitoring and crap mp3s are another couple additions to why what you're listening to May sound bad.

Okay, I'm "tuned up" to go to "work" in the garden. I use an iPod hooked up to a set of speakers thats loud enough to be heard from a block away...
Music is a lifeline around here...

The more you learn about music - the better you will understand how to process what you're hearing.
