My Dog Saved My Garden!!

So I'm walking out to my mail box when I was stopped by my neighbor. Apparently some people broke into their house...TWICE! The neighbors on the other side said they had some gangsters look in their window while they were watching tv on the couch. When they saw the people on the couch, they walked away from the house.

I live in a bunch of townhouses, so there are like 4 connected to each other, and all of our yards connect, but are fenced to seperate them. When ever I am at work, I leave my dog outside. All of my windows, except the front room, are surrounded by my fenced yard. This is how the neighbors houses are as well. The neighbor that got robbed and myself are the only ones that are ever gone for a long period of time. The mom's in both homes don't work, so they are there almost all day.

I think the only reason that my house was not robbed was because of my "vicious" dog in the yard. She is a pit bull mix, and every one that doesn't know her is scared of her. She is the sweetest dog, and just wants to lick your face, but if you come up to my door, or near my fence and she goes nuts!! She sounds like she wants to rip your face off. I think its funny when people are scared of her considering how nice she is. But this time it came in handy.

There is really no reason for this post other than to express my relief that my garden was not robbed. It is in a locked bedroom, but its not a solid door or anything. I don't want the room looking suspicious, so they could have gotten in if they wanted to.

Thank god for my dog!!

I do not recall where I read this, but a study was done interviewing incarcerated burglars. When asked what made them to bypass a house they answered, "Dogs and/or motion detector security lights." Easiest way to get in a house? An unlocked window.

Yeah I think I owe her something!!

Unlocked window you say? Thats exactly how they got in...both times. I don't get why she wouldn't lock up after that happened to her. I'm just glad that my grow room's window, along with all my other windows, is behind the fence where the dog is. I feel ok leaving that one open, and I have to for ventilation.

When someone tried to rob my old place, they tried to kick in the door. I came home to foot prints on the front door, and my door cracked down the center. I guess they got scared off. And I didn't have a dog then, just 2 worthless cats.

This thesis examines how burglars select a target and carry out a crime. The four research questions addressed by the two studies conducted for this thesis are: 1. What are the processes used by burglars to select a target, break in, steal, and distribute the proceeds? 2. What are the crucial decision making cues used to select a target? 3. What is the impact of various cues, cue alternatives, cue order and combinations selected on target attractiveness in a controlled situation? 4. Does age or experience interact with the effect of any cues?

The results furnish discussion and increase the understanding and prevention of break and enter (B&E). The research for this thesis was conducted in two studies. For Study One interviews were conducted with fifty persons who attend a methadone clinic. Participants were past heroin users who financed their drug use through the commission of break and enter. Semi-structured interviews were conducted that covered their drug use and criminal involvement. From these interviews a list of seventeen cues was developed - cue 1 (dog), cue 2 (lighting), cue 3 (alarm), cue 4 (occupancy - lights/tv/radio), cue 5 (occupancy - car in driveway), cue 6 (affluence), cue 7 (doors/windows), cue 8 (locks), cue 9 (garage), cue 10 (fence), cue 11 (garden), cue 12 (location), cue 13 (people in the street), cue 14 (neighbourhood watch), cue 15 (weather), cue 16 (inside information) and cue 17 (street type). Participants used these seventeen cues to determine the vulnerability of a target.

I have always had a dog. In my entire life I can only think of a few months that I didn't have a dog.

I have lived in the same house for 15 years. All of my neighbors have been burglerized (some more than once), & I've never been robbed! They don't have dogs, I do, that's really the only difference.

Dogs are worth keeping around, I think mankind found that out a few million years ago!

Yeah, I'm stoked I got her. She is the nicest dog ever, but when people come to my door or fence she gets all crazy. She will bark and growl and try and jump the fence to get at the people. But if she does get out, she will just lick and jump on the people. But people don't know this. I think I am going to add a "Beware of Dog" sign on my fence.

I did close all my window except my grow room window. If they were to break in there, they would have to get through a window box as well, not just the open window. Plus, they would have to walk 15ft into my yard to get to that window. And even though my dog is just running over to lick your face, she gets all crazy and starts to grow if you try and push her away. Its just because she is playing, but she looks mad as hell.

We are not allowed to have pit bulls in my complex, but I just licensed her as a mutt. Some counties have crazy BSL (Breed Specific Legislation). If the animal has a powerful jaw, a muscular build, and short hair, they are illegal. Its the dumbest thing.

And one thing that most people don't realize is that the American Pit Bull Terrier is the only dog breed that has had the human aggression bred out of them. For like 500yrs, breeders have been culling human aggressive dogs, so there really are not any unless they are trained like that. The dog fighters don't want dogs that are human aggressive, only animal aggressive. Strangers have to weigh the dogs, pull them apart in the ring, etc, so these people don't want a dog that is going to bite people. Like 90%+ of Michael Vicks dogs were adaptable. That right there should tell you how much Pit Bulls love people.

I'm just glad that most criminals are not very educated, and they think my precious little girl is a monster.

Be careful about the "beware of dog" sign. A lot of times people automatically assume it is a vicious dog. We put one of those signs on our gate back when we had a Chow Chow, the meter reader was always leaving the gate open, we'd let the dog out and he'd escape. The sign was just to say "we have a dog stop leaving the damn gate open you 'tard" but they took it as a "bad dog". Now it's been like 5 years since we had the dog put down due to old age. The meter readers are still knocking on the door to read the meter claiming they are scared of the "bad dog". Last time the guy showed it to me it actually said "bad dog" when it should have read "dumb fuck meter readers leaving the gate open"
