My First Closet Grow

I would first like to introduce myself to the forum.
I have been reading about growing for a long time and finally got off my butt and decided to dive in.

I have read several threads about growing and bought some things for it today.

Grow Space
Bedroom closet

Soil
3 small bags regular potting soil, One bag Miracle grow.

Lighting:
Two 42 Watt CFL bulbs, 2700 lumens per light.

I do not know if this is sufficient, please any comments are appreciated.

Container:
18 Gal Rubbermaid style plastic tub

Airflow
Stationary Fan

Seeds
For my first experiment, random bag seeds.
(I know, I know but better to practice on seed you have already)

To start I am germinating some seeds in damp paper towels.
Hope to see them break out of their shell soon.

I have added a quick cellphone shot of my setup so far, (going to be putting up the silver gift wrap soon.)

Can't wait! :mrgreen: Any and all suggestions/comments appreciated!!!

where did u score that paper from?? suggestion I would make a li'l box if u want to turn ur closet into a grow room commit the whole closet cover the walls get more lights with reflectors or make a grow box!! i suggest the whole closet u wont need to cover the walls if their already painted with flat paint thats a hand up 4 u but u can cover if u like u will need to have air coming in and out this is where a box comes in hand if u make a grow box u can use computer fans for ventilate the area the setup will prob cost less than using the whole closet. but u can get a chep osscillating fan for cheap also from Walmart I basically got my whole setup from their!! u will also need a hydro meter and a thermometer they come together for about 7 bucks Walmart lol um Need more info??!?! Im here :mrgreen: :mrgreen:

Got silver gift wrap from Walmart.

I don't want a huge grow room, just the corner of my closet using the tub I have should be enough I think. I am going to separate it from the rest of the closet with trash bags.

Also, i was thinking about buying some live bait earthworms to use in the soil. I have seen others implement this, any suggestions? Do they ever cause problems or try to crawl out of the box into the room? haha

Thats how i had my room until i brought the tubes its the gift warp shiny like mylar??? post pics if u can

It is cellophane gift wrap, I couldn't find "Mylar" but it looks just as shiny and good. I need to pick up some tape tomorrow to put the wrap up on the walls, hopefully by tomorrow night I will have some germinated seeds.

cool yea that will work its a wrapping mylar ppl just dont tell u these things lol thank god for fourms!!! im thinking of washing this flat off and getting some of that its not a big fuss and no fumez like this flat paint how much it runs bout 5 bucks or more??

OK, so only one of my seeds germinated, not a big surprise because some of the seeds looked white which I learned means that they are immature and will not germinate, plus its bag seed, so my expectations weren't high.

I planted all the seeds anyway. I just got home from a late night shift at work and sure enough the one that germinated has popped its head through the surface of the soil. I now have the light on it and will keep it on 24 hours for a few days.

I have another couple seeds I am thinking about germinating in some water in a coffee mug which some people have suggested.

It's like Christmas morning every time I check the closet!

UPDATE: I found another seed popping through the soil, I moved it closer to the light and it seems to be doing good. Now I have 2 plants on the way. The plant that was previously above ground is about an inch now!! It is showing 4 leaves.

I just water them now and then, when it seems the soil is too dry but I do not seem to need to do this much. Lights on 24 hours. I am now just wondering what the next step will be. I am thinking of leaving the lights on 24 for a few more days to a week and see how the progress is on the plants. Once they are a little bigger I may slowly get the light cycle down to 18, 6 with my timer.

Sorry my cell phone cam is total crap!

hey, your grow doesnt look that bad, but then again this is my firstpost/grow too lol
i converted an old 4 draw wardrobe (3.5ftx3.5ftx2ft) into my grow room, inside my closet(still need to seal it lol)
btw good luck with your grow, i hope it brings you many :joint: times

Update!!

OK, so been away for awhile but wanted to check in with an update!

Germination Started 5-31-07

 I am now 11 Days in.

I have attached some photos. The larger plant is the seed that germinated, the other smaller one was a late bloomer.

I am thinking of getting another light string setup with 2 more of the CFLs which seem to be doing a tremendous job for their low 42 wattage. With 2 more bulbs I can move the smaller plant to the other side of the bin so I can get these plants larger. Do you think they are far enough apart as they are now??

I have done nothing but occasionally water and check on them for the last 11 days. No ferts etc. I have been lighting them on 24/0 since planting.

Here are new pictures of the plants growth. The biggest one is starting to look good!

PS.. in my picture the plant looks yellowish but they are actually very green. I think the light distorted the color.

looks all good man.. remember plants this young like quite high humidity so how you controling this? i completed my first grow not so long ago in a closet,come up with so many problems but got through it in the end. had problems with ventilation n heat.not so easy so leave the doors open at nite with the lights blairing out..

Thanks for the comment.

They seem to be doing fine in the closet with just the fan on them and the two 42W CFLs. It is pretty warm in there and spacious enough for them to breathe.

I haven't really taken to much worry about humidity, temps or ferts. Just learning as I go.

Light cycle is now 20/2, I keep them warm, water them, and keep the fan on them to make the plants strong.

are you not goona have an intake/extraction fan in there.you'll probably need one once you get your hps,with fresh air coming in and old air going out your yield could be alot bigger just with this factor right.are you gonna add you nuits oin the 3rd week?

If you mean hps lighting, I just plan on using CFLs the whole time. I may pick up more CFLs but thats it. As far as intake and out take, I will see if I can improvise something but the plants are in my closet and it is not a sealed up stealth grow. So I would have to build something to do that.

I haven't thought about what nutes to use. I will have to start looking around for something. I didn't know you should add them on the 3rd week, thanks.

ALSO: I have added some photos of the smaller plant. It is showing yellowing on some of the lower fan leaves. It is kind of spotty dark and light green too. Over watering? Under watering? Not enough Nutrients? Any ideas?

Anyone have any idea what this yellowing might be? It is mostly on the lower fan leaves of the smaller plant.

Also I am getting really small flies in my grow area, any idea of how to treat this?
