My First Grow and I'm Looking for Some Input

So I have just been turned onto this site by my bro and it has helped me HUGE! I have decided to just do a hobby grow, one plant in my 2' x 3' x 5' tent with a 150W HPS bulb. I lucked out ( i think ) and got the tent, light, a 175 CFM fan and carbn filter for $580. I have managed to squeeze it into my closet to try and keep it discreet. I have been searching threads for a couple weeks now and found SO much awesome information, but I havent found anything that lists how much humidity my tent should have. I'll post some pics and I greatly appreciate any and all input.... now I just need to figure out this Journal thing. Thanks guys!

That seed should have been planted already I'm thinking. Set up looks nice, if the light is switchable think about getting a MH bulb for it for vegging your baby as the blue spectrum is better for vegging.

Ideal RH for vegging is 60-70 and 40-60 during flowering. Ideal temps are mid 70s lights on and can drop to mid to high 60's during lights off. Anything above 85 F and below 65 can be stressful to MJ and may cause growth to stop.

Wow you spent a lot for only planning a single plant, with that tent and fan you could have gone with a bigger light and been okay probably. The 150 is a great little light though, it's what I use currently and I think you'll be pleased by what you can accomplish with it. Keep in mind that you'll want to have it about 6" above your plant though if possible. Might want to get a small desk fan for inside the tent if you don't have one yet, it'll help keep the light cool and increased air circulation helps your plant's health as well. I agree with Encomium, you usually want to plant a seed when the tap root is less than half an inch long. You're going to have to be really careful when you plant that seed to make sure you don't damage the root, which could severely stunt the plant's growth. Another thing you may want to consider is planting more than one seed to increase your odds of getting at least one female, unless you are using fem seeds. Also, with having that much space and only planning to grow a single plant in there you could easily put in a couple of small pots of low light veggies or herbs and they will be perfectly happy getting only side lighting and hanging out on the edges. Best of luck and sorry for the long winded post.

Thanks for the input guys! Normally i would have planted that seed sooner but it just took off an caught me by surprise. I was SUUUPER cautious when planting it as I said it is my only seed. If memory serves me correct my brother said it was feminized. He is "Schar BK" on here so you can check his setup too. It's just finally popped through the soil today so I'm hoping that means everything went well.

Encomium, what did you mean when you said "Ideal RH for vegging is 60-70 and 40-60 during flowering."? Im not familiar with the abbreviation RH and im not sure how to find out what I currently have. What kind of role does humidity play in my plants veg/flowering? should I use a humidifier or let it go without? I really appreciate the input everyone, It's making this more fun and less stressful!

I really screwed this one up... I put my plant 6 inches below my light as suggested but it had completely dried out overnight and when i checked on her this morning it had fallen over and started to die :-( I have done some emergency watering and am really hoping she will come back.. Fingers crossed...

with i 150 hps and a fresh seedling you want to have the light about 1 to 2 feet away so you dont get seedling burn which is sounds to me like you have gotten. The light and heat coming from the hps at 6 inches is too much for your little seedling. sorry to hear about the bad news

RH= Relative Humidity... And it's important for plants health and when you flower you don't want high humidity because you run the risk of getting mold on your buds.

Thanks guys...I guess it was a little foolish to think my first ( and only seed ) would work out flawless for my first time. I'll just order some Fems and start over.

if i was you do the second time around id keep the light way farther, that millimeter thick seedling/stalk can in no way shape or form handle that amount of energy being thrown at it, lol, everyone makes this mistake it sounds like, thats like the 500th time i seen this...

i like the idea of your setup being zip n gro but i think u overpayed big, it only takes a few drill holes and a few hours in the garage to throw sumthing together and save alotta money...

cainet from lowes for 90 bux....IMG_20110326_103804.jpg
home made PC fans for a total of 200 cfm exhaust, home made air cooled hood for the 400 watt MH/HPS light,175 cfm of fresh air intake (during veg)....IMG_20110328_214923.jpgIMG_20110326_103818.jpgIMG_20110328_214909.jpgIMG_20110326_103838.jpg

the rh stays at like 50% but i have fans blowing on them and there isnt a hint of anything going wrong, i love it...i had a small case of PM but as soon as i put the extra fan in there it literally disappeared after a 1 time application of greencure...this si where im at now...gonna pull the tall (blue venom) one in like a week or so....IMG_20110416_124123.jpgIMG_20110420_211003.jpg

That looks pretty sweet man. I had started to build a cabinet but It kinda boiled down to convinence and the fact I didn't know what all i needed. This seems to work well considering it can be broken down in a matter of minutes and easily stashed. (rented house)

Do you guys have fans pulling cold air into your tents/cabs? My tent right now is staying around 80 degrees with the lights on. Is that too hot? I havent got any ducting running outside the tent yet, I just basically have the vents open.

Haiz Lankster :D First of all, welcome to RIU! Most growers would definately agree that intake and exhaust is crucial. My tent runs 77-80ish most days and they seem to love it! Even though I have an inline fan w/carbon filter I dont have it on all the time just yet. I wanna keep my humidity up in the 60% range. I also have a small fan inside the tent to circulate air onto the plants to stimulate stalk growth(wind if you will). I just turn my inline fan on for 5 or 10 mins every 6 hrs or so while they're young and then later during flowering it'll be on all the time. BTW, are you growing in soil or hydro? I read through the thread so if I missed it I apologize ;) Hope you took somethin from this. I'll be sure to check back ;) Good luck and happy growing!

Hey Mineralz, I'm just growing in soil. I didnt want to invest too much into hydro since this is literally just a hobby. I think my humidity is sitting around the 30-40 percent range and just have a bucket of water in there hoping that will help. Even though this first round was kind of upsetting i am really enjoying the knowledge and friendliness I am receiving from all of you! I have considered making some kind of ducting that runs from outside to my desk fan inside and hopefully that will pull enough air in.
