My First Grow - Bubba Kush - Pretty basic, have a few questions!

Hey guys,

This is my first major post. This is my first ever grow as well. It's nothing high tech, it's just two plants in a room with at 250 watt MH. No exhaust, just a oscillating fan, and a carbon activated air purifier for the smell!

Anyways, I have been interested, and just wanted really badly to get my feet wet with this horticultural project. I used to smoke alot, but that was years back. I have a feeling I may get more into it. I'm actually planning on making some 'Weed Wine', should be delicious! I didn't want to spend $500 on the street, so I figured it would be satisfying to grow it myself! So far it is - and I'm learning alot!

Anyways, I bought some Bubba Kush Green House Seed Co Seeds. See attached for my plants (DSCN2438.jpg). The one on the left has been vegging 18/6 for 4 weeks now and is 18 inches tall (DSCN2439.jpg). I decided after two weeks that one wasn't enough, so I germed another seed and the one on the right is now two weeks vegging at is 8 inches tall (DSCN2440.jpg).

My two questions I'm hoping someone can help a newb like me out with are:
1) When do I move these to flowering stage? Is there a certain height these should be, or certain amount of weeks? Since I have one that is two weeks behind, should I wait until the smallest one has vegged for X number of weeks or is X height tall before moving to the 12/12 flowering stage?
and...
2) The younger one on the right (DSCN2440.jpg) seems to have wilted/warped leaves. I think I gave it nute burn, as I gave it a full dosage when it was young. I should have only gave it quarter dosage at first. I'm only giving nutes every third water, and I am trying not to over water. I think I did over water though as I watered once when the top was a bit crusty but still moist - I have to wait until it's 100% dry and light so I develop a good root system right? My question is why do you think it was the wilted/warped leaves?

Thank you SO MUCH in advance for any help.

Hi I am also kinda new at this but I believe that you can move the first one to flower any time, the second one you need advice from a more veteran grower on getting it better cause I think you could flower that one also if you wanted to. Hope it works out for you.

You do need a veteran to give opinion. I can't tell the size of the pot, how many gallons. The pots look like they are less than 3 gallons. You can buy a cheep water meter at Lowes or Home Depot. Stick in at side of the pot so not damage roots. I usually go about 3 inches and check 3 places. Not a vet just my take on it

Watering kind of just comes with experience.. I usually lift my pots by hand.. if they feel light and its been a while since i watered and the soil seems dry, ie pulling away from the sides of the pot and crusty, I then flood it with water or water and nutes.. But my room has LOW humidity and i dont water like crazy...once every 3-7 days depending on the plant.. But really.. your plants look good..keep it up.. If you feel like your maybe over watering , wait another day from when you feel like you should water.

the wilted leaves don't look like a nute burn, but they could be from letting dry out too much... you should get that moisture meter as growace suggested. but if you refuse to get one of those, i usually water when the top 1/2 of soil is dry

Those pots are actually 5 gallon pots. The big plant is a 5 gallon, the small plant is a 4 gallon. The angle I took the pics at make everything look smaller. My big 18 inch plant actually had a nice stalk ;-p

I still though have no idea when to move this BK strain into flowering...... hopefully a vet sees this post! And me being a newbie, I'm going to be around here and hopefully turn into a vet! My next is going to be some sort of Blueberry!

Anyways, if you guys could help me with the flowering question for my BK strain I'd more then appreciate it.....

And about that - water seems to run though the pot of the wilted plant alot quicker. Maybe I didn't pack my soil down enough to start? I remember I packed the soil down the first plant, and it's not wilting. When putting soil in a pot should I be packing it down good by hand?

I dont pack mine down.. I just let the water make it settle then add some soil to the top... Maybe turn the fan up.. I think i read somewhere that wide leave like those are a sign of respiration problems meaning they aren't getting enough co2.

That would make sense, because I have no air exhausting - just a enclosed room. Maybe I'll take out a celing tile so air can come in via the roof ;-p

Still curious about when to flower. I can't even find any info on google on when to do this. Calling all vets ;-p

no dont pack the soil tight just fill up container and pat it down a lil. and as far as when to flower that depends on your growspace. what are your dimensions?

Thanks Jamnburn! You know what, the fan was oscillating and blowing only on one plant - and that plant it was blowing on didn't have warped leaves! So I adjusted the fan so it blows on both plants! I'll see if the warped leaves go away! Hoping so!

poke smot: My dimensions of my room are 11'x7', but I have the only two plants in the corner of the room under a 250w MH. Why does it depend on the dimensions? Thanks for your help! P.S. You guys have been AWESOME!

Cool, well I have an 18 inch (should be ready) and a 10 inch (may be young) but since my taller healthy plant is ready I'm just going to push them both into flowering today and take my chance with the smaller one. You live and you learn, hey? The BK strain is mostly indica, so it may only double in size. I also have a couple of other things I'm working on too, like I am going to make a reflector shade, right now I only have the bare bulb hanging, so yeah - going into flower mode. If I screw it up, oh well. This is my first trial grow - so we'll see what happens! I'll be sure to post pics!

you may have better success just purchasing a reflector shade... most home made ones don't have the reflectivity necessary to really help reflect. instead of a mirror, it ends up being more of a muffler... also remember that this is your grow, when you think they've been vegging enough, you put them into flower... if you want huge yields, you need time in veg... the folks who go into veg after two days or weeks aren't looking for individual yield, they're banking on having lots and lots of plants and harvesting much more quickly... so let it take the time it needs and you'll be satisfied with the results...

you can flower any time once its a plant. but u might only get one gram or wait and get 100, wait some more get a couple 100. Get it. the veg time reflects on the harvest. bassic common sense. I'm not tring to be rude sounds like shit when u read it. it works likes this any plant will go into bloom with a 12/12 mix. nomatter the size. depending on the strain dommence you'll get 50% to 100% hight growth after they go into flowering. 5 inches will be 7 1/2 to 10 inches at harvest. it's one of the first things you do is know how big you're plant will get. you don't want to grow in to the lights. do what u will sorry about spelling just don't give a fuck.

if you want <or on a tight budget> you can try the thick aluminum foil bake pans and shape it the way you want it to fit your light footprint
G/L with whatever you choose to do
poke
o and are you planning on flowering under MH?

A plant can be any size when you force flower. Look at the plant, figure its going to be 3 times that size when done.

I couldnt see your pics so I'm going by my experences here. When you over nute a plant it takes time to recover, give it lots of water at first to try and wash some nutes out wait till its dry and do it again. Some plants I had never recovered. they were twsted for good but another strain I did it to was one of my best grows. Lots more buds. Wilted leaves usually means over watering, looks like cabbage. warped leaves all twisted and shit usually means ph is off .

Good luck.

pokesmot: I actually took it upon myself to make a reflector hood - I went with the DIY lumenarc replica... check it out - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HU0EyqZ1IdE&feature=player_embedded . The good thing about this one is it uses 95% reflectivity metal (skylight extension piece from home depot) and it's smooth so it won't lose alot of the light. I'll let you guys know how it helps with my grow!

cruzer101: I deleted my pics because I read a thread with people saying that they wouldn't post pics as it's just an extra chance to get caught. I got a bit paranoid! Maybe I'll warm up a bit more to the idea down the road. BUT, thank you VERY VERY much for the comment. I never thought I could have a PH issue. I'll go pick up a PH meter and test the soil to see if that is the problem! I think I may have added too many nutes too early so I may need to level off the PH! It's weird, both plans get same amount, one is good, other has warped leaves. One of the plants has a different pot though, and the soil was really loose as water just literally ran thru it. I really appreciate your comments though, it's a good starting point for me!
