My first grow experiment

Hi all,

Just thought I'd share my little attempt with my AG. It's all experimentation and I'm not going to stress out if this fails, though I'd rather like to succeed :)

I planted 3 "Big Cheese" seeds into a SpaceSaver 6 AG two weeks ago. They have lived on the salad cycle, which is 16.5 hours on and 7.5 hours off. Pump always on. With this version of the AG, the pump is more like an airstone blowing bubbles into the water.

The seedlings look a little deformed, not entirely sure why. They may have been a little hot. I moved them to another part of the house and cleaned out the reservoir today and added a half of the small tablet of nutrients into it with the fresh water.

Any and all suggestions, comments appreciated

Whats up Virg,
First I just want to welcome you on your journey through the AG experience.

Did you add an extra pump and airstone? It is a must, and your plants will love it!

Me personally, I don't like using the AG nutes. I would recommend ones bought from a hydro store. Alot of people here like the Fox Farm line.

Your plants look good, keep taking care of them and they'll be fine.

Just read Fox's AG guide and you'll be fine :bigjoint:
Good Luck Buddy

Well this is how they looked before I changed the reservoir again and added another half of the small nutritabs.

Dill looks fine, albeit a little yellow.

Thyme also looks fine, though there are a few small brown spots on the leaves and the one browned tip. The dying bottom leaves don't concern me, I see that as a natural demise.

Basil is the weird one, no clue what's going on there, little deformed thing.
you need to fix your pH
And with plants that small wait until there atleast 2 weeks old before using any nutes at all and when you start use 1/4, 1/2 strength work to full strength and the yellowing could also be your ph adjust it in the range of 5.5-i would say 6.5 being the highest..

Well I'm not argueing with you but all my hydro gear says for best plant growth keep between 5.5-6.5 and my nute chart shows adequate absorbtion at 6.5 ph still, but for people with the water ph test kit with the drops, you wanna keep the water looking like orangishiced tea inbetween orange and yellow

Will both together make them greener looking?

I planted some soil based seeds from the same packet. They are a much darker green in colour.

Still not too sure what to do with poor little Basil. The deformity has me worried. I'm tempted to just remove the plant from the AG and concentrate or little Dill and Thyme.

Yea i would remove the lil one, focus on the two strong ones,

the pH sdjuster will make them green, your pH is off

and the more light, you get more growth

Quick update...

The two I left in the AG seem to be doing fine, though still haven't had time or money to get the pH adjusted, will do eventually. They are still growing and it's still early days so I'm not stressing...

I did a close up of the stalks near the main leaves, not sure what these are, they aren't new leaf growths as those are actually between the leaf and stalk.

The one I removed, I put in a pot, as I was loathe to kill it, and it's grown some new growth, added.

well once you get that cash, look into more CFL's and the pH

that soil plant might not be worth the effort

That's my plan, just started working again so..... :)

The soil plant isn't taking up much room and it's just aborbing water, might as well see what happens to it for now.

What are on the stalks? Probably no sign of anything useful, just curious.

Latest update.

Thyme and Dill seem to be doing fine. I've upped them to a whole AG nutritab. I've topped them as I don't want them much taller and I want to concentrate on the side shoots now.

Basil is still alive, though the poor thing was hit by it's CFL falling on it. It's next to seedlings. It's not costing me much to keep it going.

It's just encouraging to know you can take something out of an AG and put it in soil and it'll stay alive.
