MY introduction

sup yall just wanted to sign on the forums because welllll ive been lurking for sometime just reading up on stuff but now its time to participate. so i have a few questions..

im currently growing some afgan seeds i got from a sack a while back. after all my reading ive been doing it seems that after the last winter is best to start to get a crop going by august. so thats what i did. im not using anything fancy just a few potting plants and some http://www.kellogggarden.com/products?brand=kellogg&category=kellogg-soils#3 i started the soil by doing a 50/50 of that soil and some regualar ground soil. and buried each seed about 1/2" down.

i currently have all of them in direct sunlight from 7am till about 6ish pm when it gets dark. so is direct light needed or can i leave them in the shadows of my fruit trees without direct light?

also how bad is it that i started growing 3 seeds right next to each other? as you can see in the pic they are about 5-7" high each but the leaves are already beginning to overlap. if theirs something i can do to seperate these plants without shock what are my options?? i dont mind if i have to lose 1 of the smaller ones but im really wanting to just leave them together if i can.

also as you can see last nite they got attacked by some bugs and the smallest one got destroyed. is this ok? the stalks seem all intact just the leaves got ate'd up.

these are my other ones that i was smart enough to drop in a planter by themselves.

as you can see both of them have the lower leaves browning. according to the STICKYS i either have too much water or not enough. well i started watering them everyday until they broke ground then changed it to very lightly every other morning. the planter with the 3 plants never seemed to be affected by this. im not giving them any special nutrients or additives. honestly im not really trying to spend a lot of money on setups. what i do have is a container of http://www.scotts.com/smg/catalog/productTemplate.jsp?proId=prod70342&itemId=cat50106.

and final question, all the seeds i got was from some poten afgan nugs. so is it safe to say these are all females?

all 5 of the plants are starting to produce those trichome lookin things and if thats the case then i DONT need any male plants or have to worry about polinating correct??

thanks everyone!

You need to find pistils, I think it's a little early to tell yet. But they are looking good:)

well i know it should be one per pot, but i kinda jacked that up. so what are my options? can i just divide the pot evenly 3 ways then pull 2 of the plants out and replant ?. any other advice for my other questions?

I would give it another week before you transplant....but you deffinately need to transplant otherwise they wont grow for shit! and the little one should be fine, if you are worried about bugs devouring you babies bring em inside till they get a little bigger and then opt for outside, when they're more mature they can fend off pests a little easier just dont let it go untouched! BTW they look like they are pretty healthy, good stocks so far! Oh yeah and unless you want your crop full of seed you DEFFINATELY dont want any males!

Just add good potting soil to within an inch of the lowest pair of "true" leaves, not the seed leaves(cotyledons).

When the plants are about a foot tall, transplant them into their final homes.

Until all the plants are sexed, assume they're all girls.

Rather than trying to separate the plants, just put the three plants in a larger pot ASAP, and lean them away from each other, using LST. I make long(9") wire hooks for this purpose.

If a male shows up, chop him, to give the girls more room.

Good luck!

when you guys say 'final homes' do you mean in the ground and not permenatly in those plastic containers? i have a few places i could actually plant them in my backyard but its all in areas that get lots of sun in the morning and as noon hits the trees shadow the whole area. the other spot gets tons of light from the late morning till it gets dark but its more in the open and right by our gas meter. and i dont want city folks to snoop at it when they make their rounds.

im not worried about bugs at all. i think just the spot i left it in over nite was a bad area because the lil buggers got into my apricot tree also.
-is it bad that i move the planters a lot? usually im awake by 630am and as the day progress's i keep moving the plants to follow the sun up until it gets dark and i leave them and start the process the next day. (been doing this since the may 1st).
-how soon before i can start giving it miracle grow?
-whats lst?

Just wherever you intend to have them when you harvest.

There's no problem moving the potted plants except the danger of dropping them.(Arthritis in my hands makes this a real possibility in my back yard.)

You can get a decent crop using 5 gallon pots.

They are small enough that filled with soil and a plant, won't weigh more than fifty pounds.

I don't know where you are, but in your shoes, I'd read up on White Flies, Spider Mites, Aphids, and Bud Worms(Just look at the post at the top of "Outdoor Growing" for the last one.)

Welcome to RIU, you can learn a lot here. Do some reading while your waiting for an answer, you may just find it yourself.

Now back to your plants, go do what VG said, or split them up. They will do fine either way, but do something soon!

Good luck

k i just gt done transporting them to their final pottery. im glad i decided to pull them out because the whole soil was wrapped in roots. i had to rip a few out just to seperate them. but all is well, and i used the same 50:50 mixture of basic soil and good nutrient'ed (is that a word?) dirt. then lightly misted the top and put them right back out in the sun. the smallest one that got attacked by the bugs the worst is staying in his ICU container for a bit longer. btw what protects us from criminalizing ourselves here?

I would fill those pots up more to maybe 2 or 3 inches under the rim they will thank you later for the extra soil. Just my thought. Looks good though good job getting them seperated. Its amazing how many roots a tiny plant can have. Good luck ill be watching

everyone please say a prayer for my 2 big plants, today the leaves were all droopy because i had to seperate them and i dont think they liked it much. and the smallest one basically frailed and shribbled over nite and is almost dead...

The separated plants are dying of thirst!

Soak the soil and mist the leaves!

Put the pots in a shady spot and if you have clear domes or tents you can place over the large pots, it will help.

Separating plants is a bad idea.

I would have left them together, assuming that at least one would be male.

Generally, multiple plants in one pot will produce about the same weight as one, but with a bit of insurance against disaster.

so my tiniest plant died..

so im left with what i like to call the 4 horsemen. and all of them are about 7 tiers tall now (like 7 sets of branches high) and all of the stalks are starting to grow a white fuzz on them. and all 4 are producing a VERY faint dank smell. not like chronic but like hey these arent normal smelly either. so trying to google some info on the strains i have, it says that afghan kush grows to about 2meters? is that right? ive decided against the LST for now since im wanting to grow some solid stalks first before i start tugging. i havent been feeding any chemicals and i dont know if i should yet or if i want to. id kinda like to go all naturale to see the potency i could get but at the same time i dont know if i have patients to wait to grow more. i have that cali/az type weather and they are getting a solid sunrise-sundown sunlight. im gonna try to hold off and post pics next week since i can use a month to month comparison.

My Afghani's are usually seven or eight feet tall.

Have you put them in the ground, yet?

If not, when you do plant them in the ground, lean them toward the North to increase their canopy and light exposure. Read up on LST.

They need food/fertilizer. Read up on organic vs chemical nutes. I use both.
