I wouldnt suggest going so close as to burn leaves but 24" is way too far away. Check this out

According to that you're getting like 2800 to 5000 lumens at your current heights. That shows how big a difference a couple of inches can make. Put your hand on the top of your plant and lower the light til you feel the heat from it on your hand. Then I'd go up an inch or so to account of the plant growing before you see it next. Maybe do more than an inch if you have a stretchy strain. With a 400 I'd guess you can get like 14-16"?
If its getting too hot you need more ventilation/cooling instead of moving your light away

I dont know why you would even wanna be 14 to 16. I run a 1000 HPS air cooled, and it never gets more then 14 inches away from the plants in the middle and about 2inches from the tops around the outside. Im with super on this one get it close enough to burn/ bleech and adjust accordingly. thats why my one brainstorm in my tent is bleached

Hey guys, the Light has been where it is for awhile now and is doing fine, but how ever i did lower it a few links in the chain maybe a couple of inches or more, i do see where u guys are coming from, i have other plants in my flowering room which is 4x4x6, i guess i wanna make sure they get enuff light too she has grown alot in the last few days, idk i guess we'll just see what happens....

Yea dude but his hood may not be air cooled, or he may have a smaller fan than you do cooling it. You can't just say cause I've got a 1K and can do 2 inches he can too. In the mountains I never air cooled my 600 but now that I'm in the front range I could never dream of that! Its way hotter here. And suggesting someone burn or bleach their plants? I hope you were kidding
Skyhigh, your hand can handle a similar amount of heat as a plant's leaves can. If your hand doesn't feel hot you're good. It's not incredibly scientific but combined with knowing how many lumens you're getting each inch off your canopy you can get it dialed in to a SAFE height. I've burnt buds by having them too close and they have very little smell or taste compared to the buds from other parts of the plant that weren't right on the bulb. Cooked it right out! On the flip side of that coin having your light too far away will produce tiny buds that also have no smell or flavor because they never matured. It's just finding the common ground

All i was trying to say was, if u put it too close and burn a few leafs, no big deal. Just move it back alittle. Got to say the hand thing is a good indicator. More fans awel

Yea man I wasn't trying to get tough with you or anything, just trying to keep him from torching his plants. A couple fan leafs isn't bad but if his plant grew directly into that light it could be a lot more than that! My 600 is a bare bulb vertical and it didn't take long to crisp out some buds on a Strawberry Cough plant I grew. Ended up giving those buds away cause they were sub par in comparison with ones only a few inches farther away.

Im using a 400hps no air cool, just bare wit the fan hiting it alil bit.. i understand where everyone is coming from, im just thinking by me lowering it to where it's good enuff for my neville's whats gonna happen to the other plants?, im gonna try the hand under the light later, i dont want tiny bud that taste like mid grade pot lol, and i dont think imma be lowering to where it starts to burn my plants that one is a BIG No No in my book, lol, well i guess we'll see how it goes, i'll have some pic's up later!!!!

Yea I think you'll find that you can get your light significantly closer to your Nevies than 24." If you can't, you need to change something so you can. I've seen 8-9000 lumens suggested as ideal for a plant, not sure where, but I'll look. Check that chart and see how many inches that is for a 400. Put it at that height and see how your hand feels. Plant grows an inch, raise the light an inch. Looking forward to lots of budsss!

kk, so i moved my flower room around, my Neville's is closer to the wall now, she was in the middle but got so big she started to shad the other plats, she is 14 inches from top cola to bulb, see what happen for now wit what we did today.... well here's a few pic's.....Day 18 Flower for Neville's and Snow White....

Thanks guys!!! their all doing great my ak's have grown alot, snow white is coming along really well, nice little nugs all over her, My nevie now wit her i untied her (stoped lst) and was just leting her grow, but she gotten so bushy my brother made a noose around her and brought all the branches closer together so we can have room for the other plants, well ill throw some picture's up 2morr..
