depends on what kind of plant, pot size, nutes, co2, humidity, topping, pruning, how much height you have to work with

you and your open-ended questions... it depends on the size of the plant. I think a 400W light covers like 3.5ft by 4 ft or so. I am growing three plants under a 400W HPS and I have a dozen CFLs adding additional light.

oo - well i havn't started growing yet. thats y it is such an open ended question. i plan on vegging like 10 plants for 1 month and safely assuming at least half of then are male i will probably have 3-5 females to flower.

its good for 4x4 area but how many plants you can put under that area depends on alot of factors how you can answer a question like hey i have a light how many plants can i put under it hell i could say 38 in 6" pots. cant give a good answer unless you know all the varibles

I had 4 plants flowering before losing 3(males) and it seamed ok for that amount of plants,
Though I dont think I could of had to many more plants under that 400w light so some where between 4-6 maybe 8 plants if you rotate them

if you have short style indica in sqaure pots holding like a gallon and a half you could fit like 15

You could huh? That would be quite the trick indeed. 15 plants under a 400 watt system. Hey (-)_(-), sometimes less is more.
I think your original plan with ten plants vegging, and going weeding out the males, for a grow of 5 plants, is a good way to learn. This is what I did.
15 plants in 8" pots would never fit under that light.
Peace

you should be fine to do that, just make sure you rotate your plants around while their's 10.

yeah i'll just throw away my brand new HPS light ;-)
no, for that you just need a rail and a ele. mover, basically a garage door opener;) you can keep that light;)

by the way, what kind of a fixture is this exactly, normal bat-wing reflector one or a more advanced air-.cooled one?:) since this is quiet important to know to tell how many plants will fit under this;)

and since one asked this question, well i guess you can figure the value of the answers you got so far:?

it's like a bat wind reflector. but it halls walls to be enclosed, or to be the full bat-wing flexable, if he has the one i think he has.

i have the cheap 400w system from high tech garden supply. - so i guess thats a bat wing??
okay, if it is a cheap model without air-cooling you have to stay a bit away from the plant top, about at least a foot, problem more like 18". check this with your hand when the lamp is running, if it gets hot you have to stay furhter away, that easy;)

problem of this that less lumens will touch th canopy and penetrate to the lower regions. so you have to grow low plants for that set up.
the benefit of this again is that the light will spread about usable area of 3x4ft, maybe even a bit more, so you get there a real little sea of green going of about 10-12 plants:)

well thats good cause i am growing in an unused shower with dimensions of 3x4 - so that kind of works out perfectly.
