My Rookie Grow

First off, let me say hello to everyone, and thanks to many of you for your various threads of awesome information.

I have been smoking for about 20 years, and have always bought, or shared with friends, but have never grown my own. I have researched it many times, and thought about it, but never actually did it. I have found many good places for information on growing, from magazines (High Times), to friends, to the internet (like here). Lately, google has been getting abused by my questions, and usually it sent me here. You guys have some great advice, and some real knowledgeable folk. So, I think I am gonna give it a try.

Let me explain, I am 32, and I recently found out that my constant headaches are caused by 3 tumors in my brain. I have been put on various medicines, but nothing has really been effective. Weed however seems to help (or at least I am high enough to 'forget' that I have a headache) which is good enough for me. I am unemployed, and work is tough to find around here. My family lives with my mother to help care for her, so moving is difficult, besides we don't have the money to move anyhow.

So, I have decided to begin growing a single plant, just to test it out. Like I said, weed helps, but I am too broke to pay for it, so I am growing. I have to do this cheaply, so no hydroponics, or aeroponics. No $20 fertilizers, or other fancy get ups. I am attempting the totally free grow.

So her it is:

I have these seeds I got from a couple of bags I bought a few months ago. I saved them wrapped in cellophane, sealed, and stored in an old pill bottle in a box of junk in my room. I have about 20 seeds, and today I pulled out 5 tiger striped nice sized good looking seeds. I sterilized (boiled) 2 ceramic saucers, and dampened a paper towel with store brand bottled water. I placed the 5 seeds (about 3/4" apart) on the paper towel, folded the paper towel over them, and placed it on one of the plates. I placed the other plate on top upside down (like a lid, fits well). This should keep them damp, and dark. I plan on checking the paper towel for moisture, and germination every 12 hours. I am keeping the plates on a window sill so they stay warm. I will move them if it actually gets too hot, or cold outside.

I have prepped a 3/4 gallon sized pot (biggest I have) with some rocks on the bottom, some sand above that, and standard potting soil the rest of the way up.

I plan on trying the urine fertilizer method. I know the yuck factor for many of you, but honestly, is my piss really that much worse than worm shit? I plan on using my urine diluted in water 1 part to 20, until the plant is over 1 foot tall, then upping to 1 part to 10. I won't start the fertilizer until the plant is 5" tall. I plan on using some banana mash as fertilizer for the flowering stage.

I will post here at least weekly with updates, and more often if something "interesting" happens; good or bad.

I will also try to include pictures, so everyone can see what I have done, right, or wrong.

This is my first grow, and I know that conditions are not optimal, but I am hoping that I get something useful out of this. If you have thoughts, or advice, please feel free to discuss my grow here. Originally I was going to do that in a separate thread, but then I thought...why?

Miracle grow costs about $5 for a small box. Urine might work but there are better free fertilizers available. Weed tea is a great one for starters. It involves getting weeds and extracting all the goodness out of them by putting them in a stocking and soaking them for a week or so. Add a bit of horse shit, Aerate and dilute to feed your plants. You don't need to use piss really when there are so many natural fertilizers available for free. Good luck dude. If you need any help just PM me.

Just a minor update, last night when I checked the seed, 3 had begun sprouting, and today they have progressed nicely. The "tails" are all about 1/8" long, but I am going to wait until they are about 1/4" before planting. Hopefully tonight, but probably tomorrow.

Update: I now have 4 seeds with tails, 2 of which I just planted they had 1/4" tails, and looked good. I was originally only gonna do one plant, but now I am finding hard to ignore such promising seeds, so I will do 4. Now I need to make sure I can tell male from female asap, so I can get the males away from the females. Any advice on that, let me know.

UPDATE: All 4 seeds are planted, each in it's own pot, identical to the one prepped in the OP, the 5th seed never opened, but I didn't have a 5th pot anyways, was lucky I had 4, so the last one was pitched. I'll continue to monitor every morning & night, light will be my main concern, keeping them both hidden, but exposed to good sunlight will be tricky ( I don't have any lights I can use that would work, it sux).

I'll update again when they are about 2" tall.

UPDATE: I have one plant that has reached about 3" tall, w/ 4 baby leaves, the other three are only about half as tall with 2 baby leaves just starting to open up. I am not sure why there's a difference really, but I am just happy to see them growing. I would post pics, but there really isn't enough to validate a pic yet. once they start to actually look like a plant, I'll post pics.

UPDATE: I thought it was interesting to note that my plants celebrate their 2 week birthday on 4/20, the day we all celebrate our love for this awesome plant. As you can see, their still pretty small, but considering that I have had pretty crappy light for these 2 weeks, I am happy enough. I have two other plants, but they are very small, and didn't show up well in pictures. Anyways, here are pics of the 2 that I planted first, not much yet, but enjoy.

UPDATE: Well, the 2 plant pictured above are starting to take off, but still slowly. I am blaming that on poor light, which I unfortunately can't do anything about. They are only getting about 9-10 hours of sunlight, and most of the time lately, it's been cloudy. Hopefully we have some good weather soon so they can get some decent sunshine. I plane on starting the urine treatments tomorrow on those two, I have already mixed it, and am going with a 10% in water solution, which I will mist the soil with twice a day. I will also upload new pictures next week when I celebrate their one month birthday.

Also, I have some bad news, the other plants I had going have died, they never really took off. I am not sure what went wrong, but I am guessing the soil. The other three pots I had were filled with dirt from the back yard, and the two that are growing fine were filled with used potting soil. So, I figure the only common ground between those that died, was the dirt, must have been something wrong with it.

So to those that have fallen... RIP.

UPDATE: Alright, today my babies are 1 mos old (since planting) and I thought I would post pics. A1 is doing well, light has been a little better. She even is starting to stink a little, I'm so excited! A2 is doing ok, but not as well. My buddy is pretty good at guessing genders early, and he says that this one is a male. I'll wait till flowering to tell for sure, but he is usually right. Either way I am enjoying my grow, and can't really complain with what I got considering I have spent no money what so ever.

UPDATE: I'm not going to get too personal here, but I wanted to do this thread justice. A friend of mine, well not anymore, stole my shit. Not just my plants, he hit me for damned near everything I got, and split with his crackhead girlfriend. I could vent a whole lot, about everything that makes this so messed up, but that isn't relevant to this thread.

Last I saw, A was almost 2 feet tall, and starting to get bushy, B was a few inches shorter, and somewhat thinner. They both smelled awesome, but neither had started showing they're sex yet. We had about 3 weeks of great light, and they were flourishing. Suffice to say, I am very sad about losing them. However, it was fun, and I will try it again, in better circumstances. I'm gonna move somewhere new, get a fresh start, and then I'll do a thread here again.
