Nanos survey: Nearly 8 in 10 Canadians uninterested in smoking cannabis once legal

With the hours ticking down until cannabis legalization, a new Nanos Research survey suggests the majority of Canadians are not interested in smoking marijuana.

The survey conducted for CTV News found that 71 per cent of those polled were not interested in smoking marijuana once it’s legal in Canada.

Another 8 per cent said they were somewhat not interested, and 11 per cent said they were somewhat interested.

Eight per cent said they were interested in smoking marijuana upon legalization. Two per cent of those surveyed were unsure.

Pollster Nik Nanos says the results of the survey reflect the current smoking culture in Canada.

“Governments have spent decades demonizing smoking, and even though they’ve legalized something and allowed for smoking marijuana I don’t think that means that there’s going to be a new renaissance in how people feel about smoking in general,” he told CTVNews.ca in a phone interview.

The question becomes: Will this mentality change with time? The answer, Nanos believes, is something that will be revealed in the coming months and years.

“I consider this a benchmark of the old Canada, with a new Canada starting this week. One that has the consumption of marijuana,” he said.

“We should be looking at what the trend is over time because as the consumption of marijuana and cannabis becomes legalized and normalized, it’ll be interesting to see whether over time people feel a little more open to experimenting and trying cannabis and marijuana.”

According to the survey, 88.6 per cent of respondents in Quebec were not interested in smoking marijuana, the highest of all the provinces surveyed. British Columbia had the lowest number of respondents who said they were uninterested, at 73.6 per cent.

“In British Columbia there tends to be more of an attitude of acceptability related to the smoking of marijuana. At least in Quebec it could quite very well be for Quebecers the reason that there’s not an interest is that culturally they’re probably more into traditional consumption of alcohol and wine,” Nanos said.

It would also appear that most respondents are concerned about second-hand marijuana smoke in private locations such as apartments and houses.

In the same survey, 40 per cent of those polled stated they were concerned about second-hand smoke. Another 23 per cent were somewhat concerned. At the same time, 23 per cent said they were not concerned at all.

Cannabis legalization comes into full effect on Wednesday. Canada is only the second country in the world to legalize cannabis. The first was Uruguay.

Survey methodology

These observations are based on a hybrid telephone and online random survey of 1,000 Canadians, 18 years of age or older, between Sept. 29 and Oct. 4, 2018 as part of an omnibus survey. Participants were randomly recruited by telephone using live agents and administered a survey online.

The margin of error for a random survey of 1,000 Canadians is plus or minus 3.1 percentage points, 19 times out of 20.

This study was commissioned by CTV News and the research was conducted by Nanos Research.

The problem is that alcohol fueled drunks like blair designed the system. Of course they got it wrong. I'm seeing some cracks before we even begin...they're small so far...but who knows.

BC just announced that their major LP suppliers can't meet the supply promised. The LP's are looking to import from Europe to meet demand!!! Apparently BC will have 85 strains on offer but they had promised 150.

Everyone I know that doesn't smoke pot now has no desire to start smoking it when its legal. I haven't smoke for a while since my license expired and personally just because its legal doesn't mean I'm going to be smoking it on a regular basis or every weekend.

They must be future predictors. They'll lie anyway after it tanks. It will be clear a month in that sales are slow. Here in Ontario anyway.
BC having actual stores...I don't know. That will help them for sure. But will customers go to these stores? Maybe if they already were.
Chris....what you seen for stores there?

Chris...what will BC packaging look like? If it not like it was in jars the stores will look a lot different.
If it in the Ontario packaging boxes with warning....Existing dispensary customer are gonna notice the HUGE change in retailing practises.

BC only has one licensed store tomorrow...in Kamloops, and online sales. They are leaving the dispensaries alone until more come online, so business as usual here.

No idea yet. I'm sure everything will be hidden behind a curtain and you order from a menu. The federal regs call for plain packaging, so it'll be interesting to see what they come up with.

Dana Larson emailed me saying his dispensary just celebrated 10 years in business and he has no plans to shut down, in fact he plans on expanding soon.

Viva black market, or better yet, grow your own!

Ya I'm not sure if the private legal stores are allowed to display the buds in jars as is common now. This is a big Question. And pretty important to the retail model.
Maybe each province will be different.
I like to know. Because if you can't see it or smell it...they gonna fail even faster.
