Natural pest repellent

Anyone here grow ginger or garlic or mint plants IN the pots with your weed plants as a creature repellent? For now Im just putting garlic chunks on the top of the soil, but planting them seems a more permanent type solution. Is there no real reason that wont work, like it interfering with the cannabis growth?
