Hi! I need some help diagnosing the problem so i can help save one of my girls life! she has brown edges on the big leaf, and curled up brown tips on the smaller one. A few brown spots on the bigger leaf as well. using a 400w MH, and noticed this when i moved the light to within a foot. It gets up to 87F in the closet. Is this heat or have i just overwatered. Cheers! :wall:

ima semi noob but it looks like its getting to dry because of the heat.., maybe try an put a plastic dixie cup over it, but your temp is very high.

thanks bra. lifted the light to 2ft. off the tops, and turned up the fan a notch. gonna lay off the watering a bit till the root structure can develop more. the faq's are very helpful since this is very common. maybe i scorched the leaves. would anybody prune these?:?:

Yeah it's heat but if the temps are getting that high in the closet you need to keep the humidity really high.... 70% at least.

The fan blowing on them is only making things worse. The only time you wanna use a fan is to exhaust the room. You should think about punching a hole in something to move that hot air out.

i keep both closet doors cracked so that it vents as the fan hits the lights and pushes it out of the closet. it's a rental so i cants modify the place.:wall: and humidity at 70?! holly shizzle how do i do that..it's at 50 right now. tried putting a jar of water under the lights but no digs. i'm glad i don't have a 600w or a 1000w for that matter! :fire:

much thanks. i just put a pyrex container in there, and i'll fill it with boiling water twice a day. the surface area should be the same as the bucket so it should cover the humidity. stepped up the fan to pump air out the top portion of the closet like a funnel. lights 3 feet off my girls! :weed: going to move the fish out of this room, close the door and open the window more so cold air enters and the heater doesn't go overdrive on the tank.:-P

Don't listen to ES, he's a :dunce: that's been giving out a lot of bad advice.

I definately agree that you should move your light about 3ft above the plant.

Keep the door open with plenty of moving air, IE a fan on the plant. It promotes cellular structure and will make them strong.

At this young of a stage the seedling loves humidity, and you could mist them with a spray bottle of water every day, or every other day. Turn the light off when you spray, turn it back on after 2-3 hours when there aren't any water droplets on the leaves.

After you have 4-5 nodes, you can lower the lights down and begin light feeding.

Are you going to flower with th MH? Or switch to HPS.

You seem like an intelligent enough grower, you looked in the FAQ ;) maybe ES will do the same

Not too sure about it, haven't done it myself, but there's a thread on here about using water from a fish tank because of benefical ingredients.

-Seamaiden- knows all about it.

And don't worry about overwatering a seedling, they love it, but after it starts to grow, watch the moisture levels.

thanks, appreciate the input. i'll try to mist them tommorrow. one of the four leaves are a little yellow, so i'm a little concerned. this was an older one that got sick as i brought the light close. i pruned the dead leaves after i fried the one with the mh. the remaining three seedlings are thriving. i will flower with a hps bulb.
as for the aquarium water, mine is saltwater. the freshwater would be a good idea because of phosphate and nitrate given off by fish waste. this would be a bonus fertilizer.
it turns out my thermometer/humidity meter is a piece of @#$@ and was reading 3-4 celcius over the actual temp. so i just measure the bowl of water with a water thermometer....:bigjoint:

I might be totally off base here, but I'm not so certain that one should panic at the sight of every curl, brown spot, or misshapen leaf on a seedling until they have at least gotten the first 5 leaf set. 22 out of 24 of the ones I started had "something" wrong with them. Now that they are settling in to thier new homes, they are starting to stabilize out and all are looking real good.
Anyone have an opinion about this theory?

I see alot of 1st time growers (myself at the forefront) who absolutely freak out at anything they see as wrong in the 1st 2 weeks. They haven't even gotten established yet, and still deriving nutes from the cotyledons. I'm thinking that 3 weeks into it one might start worrying about signs of stress, but not at less than 2 weeks. I COULD be wrong tho.....It's been known to happen occasionally.

I'm with you there pirate, until you're on the 5th node, or even further can you tell if it's gonna be good.

I've seen some muntant little sprouts, that, within days, turned into nice looking seedlings.

As long as you've got good conditions, there's no need to worry.

But, not much light is needed, lots of moisture is needed, and a decent temperature is a must.
