Need advice installing carbon filter into ceiling, no attic access

I have a closet that I need to get an exhaust setup for asap. Temps are just getting too hot. I want exhaust with a carbon filter into the ceiling. I'll be using 4in filter and fan. However just the flange is 4in, the filters are more like 7-8 around. So any advice on how to get the filter inside the ceiling? If I cut a larger hole, how can o create good duct seal using 4in? It's an older home and currently no attic access.

Carbon filter =====FAN pulling air====attic==== airflow moves this way ------->

would this work? just cut a hole in your ceiling and load the edges of the tube and ceiling with metal tape or gaf tape.. that way the only thing going into the attic is a 4 in tube.

I'm not sure. The flange of the filter is the only piece that is 4in. The 'tube' of the filter is more like 7-8 around, so that whole tube would need to be in the ceiling. Which would take an 8in hole. The other problem is about securing the filter. The filter is 6 pounds so maybe the fan would be able to hold it upright?

Why you trying to put the filter in the attic? They dont go there they go inside the grow room

My grow room an interior closet with no current exhaust. That would do no good. I need to clear the room of hot air and that air needs to be filtered.

Keep the filter hooked up to the exhaust fan inside your closet. the only thing that needs to go out of the closet is the tube connected to the filter and the fan that exhausts the hot air. You dont need to "push" the air through the filter.. you can have it "suck" through the filter in your grow room, then to the fan.. then through the tube that leads into the attic.

I think to do what your saying, I would have to have an inline carbon filter. Not just the ones with one flange and the other end capped.

attach the filter directly to your inline fan in the closet.. then the tube on the other end of the fan into the attic.

Great! glad you have it figured out, good luck :)
So I got the filter today. It's bigger than I thought. Any thoughts on how to hang/suspend it vertically? It's about 7lbs and I don't think the duct camp will be secure enough to hold it.

I took a picture of what I did. I used cheap chain from home depot. its really easy to cut or unbend with pliers. just use that to hang it off the ceiling with wall anchors that open up once you put them in the wall. or just drill into a stud. hope that helps!
