Need advice - Multiple Seedlings single pot

I think I've made a mistake.. I sprouted 8 seeds in 4" plastic cups, 2 seeds per cup. Now that they've sprouted I"m thinking the two plants per cup are going to collide and when transplanted to 2gallon square containers having two in each will hinder growth. My theory going in was to plant 2 per container and then weed out the males/weak plants later. Can I still cut the small pots in half and separate the plants to separate containers? How long should I wait since the sprouts literally just popped out of the soil?

Another question I have is regarding light for these seedlings. I have a 400w hps but no flourescents handy. Can I use the 400w for the small plants? How far shoudl I keep them from the plants? Id on't want them to stretch.

I am a noob too, but from what I have gathered from this site and my learning experience I will try to assist. I would transplant the multiple seedlings ASAP because once the roots develope, they will get mixed together...and that is bad. I would keep the HPS bulb like 14-24 inches away from your new babies, once they develope a little...I would drop the light to 6 inches away, thats where I have mine now and everyone is doing ok.

kep the light a good distance away from the seedlings so they dont get burnt....and do whatever you have to do to get each one in a separate pot asap.....

Your probably going to lose some of them. If I were you I would start over. I started my toungest plants in 1 pot but it was 4 in 1-1 gallon pot. Also they were seeds that were left over from germinating I didn't think they would be viable but I waited a few weeks to transplant them into seperate pots, 3 lived and are over 18 inches tall. If they've just sprouted then I doubt they can handle the shock. Also I started my first 2(oldest 2 now) in 8.5 oz. cups. The roots were growing out the bottom in a week and 1/2 soooo I would start over and would start them in a 3 or 5 gallon container and be done with it. I went from 8.5 oz. cups to 1 gallon pots, to 5 gallon buckets so 2 transplants total, next time around they will start in 5 gal. pots and will never be transplanted. Just my .02

Just speaking from my experience
