Need advice related to transplanting my girls

Can you bring soil up around the stem of a marijuana plant similar to a tomato? Will it damage the plant if I sink it up to the first branches? ~1-3 inches depending on the plant.

For tomatoes this will strengthen them and make them more bushy. Pretty sure burying a couple inches will be fine, just wanted to make sure as this is my first grow. Will help to keep the plant short in my room.
