I tried growing some easy kush and big bang 2 in general backyard soil but had a problem with pests like woodlice and spidermites, the plants died after they reached about 1-2 inches I generaly think I overwatered and over fed nutrients which caused stem rot and they just flopped.
I went out and bought some femenised big buddah cheese seeds, westland compost and lawn sand. Would anyone recommend westland compost and lawn sand mix as a medium for growing? I dont want to have any pests and mess up this time

Hey! I notice you're from England so this website would be great for you, you might even live local to one of there shops.

That is the soil I use, it's perfect.

The soil isn't what attracts pests, unless you use back yard soil which of course already has pests in it so will come along for the ride and eat your plants.
There is all sorts of reasons pests will come, heat being a major factor, if it's too hot spider mites will come.

You should be fine take a look at the soil in the link above anyway just so you know for the future.
