Needed: Teachers of the Green

1) Call me old school, but I'd never teach a class or go to a class so a bunch of strangers could find out my name and that I grow. Even though I'm Am 20 and 64 compliant these days, I still like to keep a low profile. The only people who know I grow and where I grow have been my friends for 20+ years. Basically, if you weren't on my junior high football team, you're not going to get the tour.

2) Back in the day, I turned a lot of people on to growing and it was a pretty good money-maker. I'd supply the equipment, genetics, and know-how in exchange for a forty percent cut off the first two harvests. After the first two harvests, they'd also have to buy the equipment from me. The only problem was that some friends would try to cut me out after the first harvest. What can you do...

During that time, I also heard stories about guys doing something similar, except right around chop down time, they'd rob their "friends" and skip town.

You bring up a good point. I’m sure most of the “old school” growers who still have significant financial interests tied to MMJ or the black market feel the same way and rightly so. They learned life lessons the hard way about security, betrayal, theft, etc. I’m sure many legal small business owners share the same experiences. The difference is a legal business has many open avenues for help where the growers over the years have moved further underground into a shroud of secrecy for protection. That will continue for those individuals until another way is better financially for them.

For the new home grower the times have surely changed. I truly believe the right to legally cultivate a small number of plants as the most important part of amendment 64. This right to pursue an interest in growing MJ is like pursuing an interest in any other hobby. I don’t think the legal HG will need to take anymore precautions than what they already do to protect the other interests in their life.

I want to see the HG community grow into a socially accepted activity and feel it will grow quicker if it is given the needed support and knowledge. I hope that some of the “old school” will share their experience and expertise with others growing their own. A few good teachers are needed to provide a largely unskilled base the tools needed for success. Once learned those skills and knowledge can’t easily be taken away and will be used to perpetuate growth of this new and open community.

My quess is that the hydro/grow stores will fill the knowledge void. They have the most to gain (at least initially) by making it easier to grow. If they hold classes in their shops and show people how to setup and use their equipment it can be a competitive advantage for them. Grow stores are already feeling the pinch from the A20 wave of grow setups, followed by the Craigslist-fueled used equipment sales when the basement growers were no longer allowed to sell excess meds to MMCs. If I had a grow shop I'd be working on a series of classes for newbie ganja growers, that's for sure.

Your right Medshed should be a no brainer for hydro shops. They can't beat internet prices on anything other than grow media. Its the support services that keep and grow their customer base.

[h=2]Definition of WEED[/h]1
a (1) : a plant that is not valued where it is growing and is usually of vigorous growth; especially : one that tends to overgrow or choke out more desirable plants (2) : a weedy growth of plants

I dunno about you but I grow FLOWERS.

back on topic, first hand and basically on your own (with internet access of course) is the only way to learn to grow. I like how they have these two day courses , can't learn much in two days , I don't give a fuck who the teacher or student are.

Some folks are more willing to part with their $$ than take the time to actually get good research data online. The "on-demand" society also makes some more likely to want immediate question and answer sessions rather than waiting for a reply on a post or tube video from somebody who may or may not know wtf they are talking about.

More power to anybody who can monetize these tendencies.

My opinion is, there is so much information and cannabis forums out there on the internet that you don't need classes. Just do a little research and save your money for when you actually start your growing venture. Why line someone elses pockets for knowledge. That's not what its all about. The ones that are charging for it, aren't in it for the right reasons anyway. I wouldn't charge anyone for my love and knowledge of the plant. Just pay it forward. Its good karma anyway you look at it.
Ya, I look at those and few others. The only one that focuses growing is the thegrowschool and it didn't look active when I checked. I'm just saying there is a need for classes and its an opportune time for people/companies to provide them to the home grown community.

Why not start your own classes? You could easily make good money teaching a couple half day class on the weekends.

but then you have people on forums asking question like "how do I set my timer??" and then there's the ones that have all the answers but actually don't have a clue. depends on the individual and how much dedication(not to mention dollars)they're willing to put into it as to whether they succeed or fail. I'm sure there's been more than one person shut it down due to one pest problem. If all of us felt that way how many of us would still be growing?

I disagree with the notion that you can learn all you need to know to be a hobby grower from research. Believe me, I have done a load of research on all the real boards and have read 3 or 4 books that were supposed to be "grow bibles". Even so, I have issues pop up with my 1st grow that I need help with.

I am lucky to have received generous help from the CO mmj community - thanks all.

If one of those highly skilled growers were to offer a 1/2 day course or series of courses, I would sign up and be happy to pay. It's probably more effective if the person taking the classes has some experience. That way thy can come with some specific questions.

I would be worthless as a student if stoned to the bejesus.... wait a minute, I recall being stoned to the bejesus 24/7, and plenty else besides, and somehow making it through school once upon a time. But that was math.... that stuff seemed to click for me when stoned.

Even though, I'm sure I couldn't stand up to the sex wax....

Now I think about it, the weed back then wasn't anything like now, so maybe I best stay sober :-|. And the closest we came to hash was that black afghani stuff, which I think was 1/2 opium lol. I do recall being worthless when it was available which wasn't very often.

A lot of people end up taking a grow course AFTER trying it on their own unsuccessfully. As for learning online and from books and friends, that's great, in fact, there is nothing one can learn in college that one can't learn from books, etc. The only difference is the TIME it takes for the learning process. We believe that experienced, knowledgable instructors along with "hands-on" learning are the best (and fastest) way to learn. Seems like with all the growing sites out there, the bulk of the sites as well as this one are, clogged up with people (that have never taken a growing class) who are having problems with their crop. That shows us that the "self learning" process is a LONG process! If you aren't consistently getting 5-7 ounces of TOP QUALITY BIG buds from each plant (grown in soil under a 600 WATT HPS bulb), you should consider taking a growing class. We welcome out-of-state students, and can help you find some free cannabis to smoke while you are here to take the class. (It is legal in Colorado to AID someone in finding recreational cannabis, and any adult can possess up to 28 grams legally).

600 watts and you are only expecting 5-7 ozs? Fuck pay me and i will teach you instructors to really grow.
600 watts for less than 200 grams? thats less than a third of a gram per watt.
I don't think any of us would be happy with those results, i know i wouldn't, i would need like 6 600 watts just to make it harvest to harvest.

The Grow School's next available class is Sunday April 14th 2103 in Lakewood, CO (outside of Denver, CO). The benefit to taking the course is a lifetime discount at one of the biggest grow supply stores in the area (online also), and 1 year of our free 24/7 "Garden Support Program". We welcome out-of-state students, and can help you find some free cannabis to smoke while you are here to take the class. fin??? is that you???
