Fernando is credited for introducing piri-piri chicken to Montreal. He started in the 60s with a corner store selling Portuguese grilled sardines from the live fish market down the street. Sardines did not sell so he switched to piri-piri chicken and opened Ramados in the 70s. With gentrification of the neighbourhood, Ramados has been a success for nearly 50 years. Unfortunately, Fernado decided to grow his business with a second location just before the pandemic. He decides to cut his losses and close up shop.
Fast forward to today. Ramados has re-open under new owners. Diners are happy to have piri-piri chicken again. Fernado cries "Is it still Ramados when he is not there?" New owners are happy not to change anything. They are lucky to have a turnkey profitable business without franchise fees. I think Fernado underestimated the value of market research and branding.
Guess there is such thing as a free lunch after all.
