New farmer questions :)

Hello all this is my first post. Im starting to gather the materials for my first grow. Im planning on buying a grow tent and i found one that i liked. Its 2.6'x2.6'x5'. i guess my first question is how many plants can i grow in that sized tent. and my second question is i bought some 4' 2 bulb t5 fixtures. obviously they wont fit horizontaly so i was wondering if it will mess anything up if i mount them vertically. im using these fixtures for vegging and then im making my own high power led light with about 20 660nm red leds and 10 royal blue leds for flowering. my last (for now) and third question is i got(for free) a 110cfm inline exhaust fan is that enough for ventilation.

The fan is plenty enough cfms for that size of tent now as for how many plants it would be one. You could do a solo cup scrog but in my opinion if your a new grower I would suggest that. I would just grow one plant in a 5 gal pot and learn how the plant work. My advise Is be patient and learn from your mistakes you will F&$@ up so use bag seeds unroll you got it down.

I will try to answer your questions. You can grow from 1-9 plants, it depends on your growing method/how small you flower them (i would prob grow 4 and flower them at less than a foot tall but it depends on if you train them/strain etc). You can mount the fixtures vertically along the walls but you will need to add some overhead light (maybe cfls) to keep them from stretching etc.
Would need to know more about where the tent will be and what the temps are outside of it to comment on ventilation. 110cfm does not seem like enough though. You will need an oscillating fan inside the tent to help ventilate and strengthen the stems as well. Good luck

Edit: I would suggest more than one plant if this is your first grow, chances are you could mess one of them up. Give yourself a better chance to complete the grow by starting al least 2.

I don't concur with the bag seed recommendation. I say buy yourself some feminised seeds of your choice that way you know exactly what you are getting and u don't end up back here in two months with a "is my first plant a male" or "how much more will my plant stretch" thread.

Thanks for the quick replies. I'm going to be putting the tent in my basement it's almost always around 75° down there. I'm going to add some cfl lights to the top also. All the seeds I ever get in a bag are always dead so I was just going to order some from attitude. I also have a timer system so I'm not going to do any autos.

2 1/2 x 2 1/2 x 5 is pretty small. youll prolly only be able to fit 1 decent sized plant or 2 small ones in that space.

mounting a tubular cfl fixture vertically in a space that close will have the plants growing into your lights, with those lights and a plan to just veg, use a closet.

tents are mainly used to isolate your plants, protecting them from light variations and to control the odour.
they dont start really stinking up the joint till flowering is under way, so the tent could be used to flower one decent sized mature plant, which is prolly it's intended purpose.

during veg you really need to get in there with the trimming, training and pest inspections, so you'll have to pull your plants out of the tent for that, plus the inevitable rotating and tying if you mount the light vertically.

my advice: veg in a closet, flower in that tent with a carbon filter and a HID, which could be as little as 150 watts, or several moveable CFL side lights with one big one overhead.

If your temps are 75 you might be surprised how much more even cfls and flouros will heat up the tent but you might be ok with the 110. I agree with LGC get some feminized beans and choose a beginer strain like northern lights.

wow it either all of you guys have no lives or your all f*cking awesome. Im going to lean towards the latter. Seriously ive been stalking this forum for a while and im blown away as to how helpful you guys are. i dont really have an option for growing in a closet and the grow is basically going to be for personal use and for friends so 1 maybe 2 plants will be my max for right now.

watch the video homey, even if you plan on growing in dirt, his grow setup is prefect for a small operation in a basement.

Here's the EQUATION FOR CALCULATING IN LINE FAN SIZE NEEDED
1 - Convert FEET to METRES
2ft 6in = 0.762m,
5ft = 1.524m.

2 - Area of tent 0.762 x 0.762 x 1.542 = 0.895m

3 - 0.895 x 1.25 (this allows a 25% margin of error) = 1.19 metres per minute
1.19 x 60 = 67.15 m3 p hr (metres cubed per hour).

So 67.15 metres cubed per hour is the necessary strength of the inline fan you will need.[/B]

Just remember that In Line fans do more than scrub out odours (using carbon filters) and exchange air - They are also a major weapon in the battle against heat.
But this can also mean that, in small spaces, in line fans can be a cause of excessively low temperatures.
A fan speed controller (or a cheap light dimmer switch) may be needed to dial the fan speed RIGHT DOWN.....

Area of Tent/Amount of Plants....
In that space I would have 4 x 12" Pots with a plant in each.
You would have to flower them early, keep them short AND trim away undergrowth and (some) side branches that threatened to tangle and block out light penetration.

ALSO
Rather than worry about seeds (bagseeds or expensive genetics, germination, propagation, transplantation....)
Get cuttings/clones and learn all about the VEGETATION PHASE and the FLOWER PHASE.

Then, when you've grown a crop or two, and you've gradually accumulated the CFL's and bulb holders/leads, propagator and rockwool cubes....
You can take your own cuttings off your own plants (in the last week before they change from VEG to BUD
OR
You can buy seeds and germinate them, grow the seedlings for about 2 weeks (under 18/6 T5 6400K CFL's) then put them under MH HID's (also 18/6).
