Seems like the layer we run through is so thin even a rub on glass penetrates it.

If it works for you I say go for it.
I've never tried scarification myself but I've heard of people using it successfully, specifically on old seeds. I usually sow the seeds directly into the soil myself, sometimes a little pre-soak.

I tattoo my seeds before germination. It makes them badass plants. Scarification sounds a little too S&M for me, hope it works out for you.
