New Grower - Couple problems in the first few weeks

I'm a new grower about 3 weeks in and I ran into a couple of problems. I've been scanning the forums and there seems to be quite a few knowledgeable folks so I humbly ask for your insight.

A little background: I started by obtaining some seeds obviously. Since this was my first grow and knew it would be more learning experience than anything else I used some freebie seeds. Three were from some recent above average bags I had. The rest were from a buddy who had a film canister half full that he had been collecting from good bags over the last five years. My three germinated and about half of the ones of his I used did as well. I used a simple fluorescent the first 10 days to germinate and the initial vegetation. I then switched to my 200 watt fluorescent and positioned it about 2 feet over the plants. My hydro system was a homemade ebb and flow setup with generic plant food. I changed this up six days ago because I was unhappy with how it was working and was told that I really should use a specific hydroponic plant food. Currently I am running the solution about half strength (I was told to work up to 100%) and the light is about 12 inches over the plants. The room has good air flow, stays heated between 65 F during the dark cycle (4 hours) and 75 F during the light cycle, and humidity is around 25 to 30 percent.

My problems: 1) The plants seem to be lengthy and weak. Most have fallen over because the stem will not support the weight, although, they continue to grow. The exception is the two plants in the middle which I started a week later and had more direct light right from the beginning. I was told lengthy and weak were a sign of poor light so I hope I have that problem corrected. 2) I just started noticing a little bit of light-green to yellow in the center of the plant head and some curling on two of the plants leaf tips. Maybe curling isn't the right word. They have irregular shape like chunks are missing and/or ripped. I have no idea what causes this, but I don't see it in the two plants I started a week late - those two seem to the strongest.

Yo dude, 1st of all dont worry, they are weeds, i said weeds, i have been growing for 8/9 years and i still get the odd long slim plant, easy to solve, get sum straws from mcdonalds etc cut to size shove in the rockwool or soil and support until they grow out of them, they wont be long in pushing out the straw, cut up the straw so it will open etc (watch you dont catch the stem when closing over ok) very gentle hands needed ok, the biggest mistake people make even me when i started is (OVER FEEDING) try feed them the same time all the time, and have your feed always pre made ok, its good for a nuit mix to sit for a bit min 24hrs, if it says 7ml per ltr on the bottle then use 2/3 mls then slowley add more as they get bigger, mind they are babies, when we were born did our mums give us a steak ? NO so just watch them get stronger by the week and increase the food, the yellow shit is ok it will go away and MIND, ITS A WEED, they can grow wild with NO help, hope this is of sum help, p-s i liked your input to detail.

Thanks for the feedback. I probably do worry too much. I have an abandoned bathroom (its an old house - why they put a bathroom like a closet right in the room I will never know) in the room upstairs I use as an office. God - I must check in on them 12 times a day. Maybe that will wear off.

do you have a fan blowing on your plants? once you get them supported if you add a light breeze it simulates the wind outdoors and helps those stalks get nice and beefy. just a thought. good luck.

As ive said dude even i still worry sometimes but they are not long in getting strong then you forget what they were like when they were small, i have a mate who always puts in a shit load and every time i stand and say youl not have the room for them he says they will be cool, they get big and yipp he has not got the room and ends up having to pull good plants, but just keep in mind they are young and small but they will get big and strong, they are weeds so just keep it simple not to much fuss. chill

Hey, the straw idea worked great. My little plants look like some sad children's ward at the cancer hospital. See the attached picture.

I also included a picture of something I didn't expect. I added more hydroton to the pots last week to help hold the stems up. The moisture worked upward through the hydroton and I ended up with a bunch of new roots off the stem. I suppose left alone the new roots would have taken hold and straightened the plants out by themselves eventually.

Yes, I did at the beginning and I do now, although, now it is not blowing directly on them as much. It is a very small room and the air flow does move them around a bit.

The problem was that the plants had fallen right over and were laying on the tote cover wanting to grow like a vine. The straws seem to work great and new roots are taking hold. I have a feeling in another week they will be strong enough to put the fan back on them directly.

They're stretching because the light is too far away. Get it as close as you can without burning them.

12" is too far away for flourescents
I wasn't sure on distance and I have been making a lot of adjustments. The problem is is that the light dimensions are smaller than the tote dimensions. If I put the light too close the plants want to grow at a 45 degree angle toward the bulb. The light is not a standard fluorescent light - it is a HO (125W @ 6100K) hooded light. It looks like it is built from the same hood as the HPS and MH lights. I assumed the high output gave me a little more working room, but this is my first grow and I really don't know shit.

Yes, that was the mistake I made at the beginning. Wrong light initially and then way too high. I adjusted this the second week and the two plants I planted a week later have never shown any signs of stretching. The initial plants seem to recovering and strengthening.
