New grower - tent temperature problem 33C - should I switch to LED?

Hey guys,

Well my enthusiasm with getting into growing was squashed as soon as I turned on the lamp for the first time. The tent temperature raised to 33C which from what I'm hearing is above the max.

I am using the non-LED lamp Sylvania HPS Grolux 250 W. It adds about 7C to the temperature of the tent. So I am wondering if switching to LED would reduce the temperature, and by how much? I need at least 5C cooler lights..

Thanks!

What size is the tent?
How did you take the temperature, directly under the light?
What size extraction fan?

An equivalent LED would reduce the temp inside the tent, especially if you get one that lets you mount the driver outside of the tent. Your temps will go down, and your leaf temps would go down even more (LED produces a fraction of the IR that HPS does). Another option is to increase your extraction rate via your vent fan.

So your tent is 7c hotter than the ambient air? You can never get the tent lower than ambient.

My 300watt led full power will make my tent just as hot as my 600hps did.

I only need to run the led at 120 watts tho for the most part. Depends on what the plants want...they like it around that. So it does run a lot cooler.

I have to run my ac in the summer and keep my ambient temps constant to keep my tent temps constant.

My led is about 5F hotter than ambient at 120 watts

600 hps was 10F hotter than ambient.

This is 6" blower on full also.

how big is your tent? 250w hps is small i’d guess its just ok for a 60x60 tent. if you’re running a 60x60 tent get a true 100-150w led fixture and mount the driver outside as rurumo suggested.

I think a good exhaust dumping air out your tent should be enough. Maybe exhaust out the top or get duct closer to light, driver outside

250w pretty small. i am running 1000w HPS and not going over 31C in 5x5x7 tent. get good exhaust fan. use intake fan to pump cold air inside. at least room temp Air to intake. what i learnt here is; doesnt matter how hot air in tent. leaf temp is matters. my tent at 29C now but leaf temp is 22.
