new guy here, would like some advice

hey guys, hope all is well

im new to growing mj, just set up my own small tent yesterday, learning something new every day

i guess growing for profit is frowned upon by most here but im gonna go with honesty and hope people will understand

hit a rough stretch in my life which hasnt gotten better in a long while, im kinda one step before homeless so i finally decided maybe weed can help me improve my situation. not a permanent thing, want to make some money and get out, hopefully before my ass ends up in the big house

plan is to take the profits from what i make from my first grow and invest in a grow room, my question is, is it better to use several individual tents, or just turn one whole room into a grow room. which is better in terms of yield, and also electricity cost. obviously my constraint is the electricity bill, im wondering if with a grow room i can increase my yiled and keep a low enough bill to not raise suspicions

maybe you can also point me to some guides on grow rooms, most seem to be regarding grow tents, micro grows, growing in wardrobes, cupboads etc

any help appreciated

Welcome to RIU......just start reading and you'll learn a lot. There's a ton of great info, and then there's a ton of bad info.

My friends and I are contemplating on using gas powered generators to get completely off the grid. We are planning on digging out a geothermal cooler and possibly use led's for less electrical use. There are probably better ways that don't involve jeopardizing your freedom. Money is not worth your freedom.

Gas & maintenance on those generators will far out weigh the cost of "grid" electricity.
FWIW

just a thought...most people dont make a single dollar their first grow even if that was their main goal....if your worry is cost just use a room dont buy a tent..unless someone else sees your bill it will not raise suspicion, the electric company doesnt give a shit as long as you pay your bill lol

I would have to agree with above.. The cost of the generators, plus you need gas too. I think it's cheaper to use electric and it doesn't matter what lights you use, the wattage is the wattage and that's what it uses no matter if it's hps led or cfl... 600w of led cfl or hps is going to burn the same amount of electric , plus you mentioned your in a rough spot and led is killer expensive unless you get a china knock off.

one. its not legal to profit off mj . 2 your finished products are up for a set donation price. stay legal talk legal . 3 use the entire room for get the tent. 4 check this web site out electric bill calculator .http://www.rapidtables.com/calc/electric/electricity-calculator.htm and http://www.hydroponics.net/learn/hid_lamp_op_cost.asp and if your actually trying to make profits off this. first time you will fail. my advice to you is get a honest job. work hard turn your life around. you will need to spend 5 grand min to get a real set up to make a good donations to live off of . and your electric bill will be at least 700 a month for the first 3 months before you get any product. still want to do this ? get a job lol. like most people. you could make this a hobby make some great donations. keep it fun. but don't expect to start up and pay bills with it. you wont see any profit for 4 months starting up.

and for running a generator . a 5000 dollar generator that is diesel fuel will cost you 2 times as much to run then just using electric from the utility company. and one of those smaller ones 500 dollars. very costly to run uses 5 gallons of fuel every 4 to 6 hours that's 40 dollars a day and about 1200 a month is gas. but if your serious about a generator they do make a nice natural gas one. the starting price is 25 thousand dollars. and it will be less costly then the utility company electric end of the month. or you could use solar panels only need to buy 20 thousand of those but hopefully the suns always out.

while i agree with most of that^ ive never seen a 700 dollar electric bill in my life....this depends LARGELY on where you live, which he didnt say so keeping it legal and calling it a donation might not matter at all anyway..use flouros you can get through an entire veg for wayyyyyy less than 700 bucks a month...5000 minimum huh lol must be a nice large set up your talking about...i could LIVE off of a 3000 dollar set up easily so if he spent a g he would easily (assuming he knew what hes doing) make back about 6000 per run..and ofcourse thats just a number im throwing out but for me a 1000w 1200 dollar investment would surely bring me back about 5000 profit on the low side....just my opinion though, still bottom line is any way you cut it your not likely to make a thing your first grow or two..

lol why does everyone keep going back to the generator thing...the op isnt even the one who suggested that nor do i think he would entertain the idea being a noob, if you guys were just trying to steer him away

Hey, Michellin.

First, calm down and take a deep breath. Next, go get a job at a fast food place if necessary. I say this for two reasons.

1) You'll need a way to pay for your grows (seeds, lights, nutes, accessories).
2) You're looking at months (I'm guessing 5 to 6) before your hard work will begin to materialize into capital.
3) Working at that shit job will keep you from fucking up your plants, because you'll keep wanting to mess with them all day every day, and watch them, and too much love will kill them. Trust me. Today alone, I think I've helped diagnose three or four people with problems in their grows (mostly too many nutes).

Generator is a ridiculous notion. You can do fine with a decent LED panel or two or three to keep electric bill down, but you'll be putting in the investment in the panels up front, which could cost you, but will work out over time.

If you're flat broke right now, you need to get a job, because even if your first grow are autoflowering, and you do everything on earth right, and it all goes perfectly (unlikely for a first grow, but it can happen), you still have to wait ten days for your seeds to arrive (if you order them tonight), three days for them to pop (we're at about two weeks now and you barely have seedlings), and then another 60-70 days for them to mature. After that, you'll need to cut them and dry them (3-7 days depending on your environment). Then you'll need to cure them (two weeks to two months, depending on quality you're after).

Growing and donating isn't a quick scheme. There are a lot of other variables. Even if you had a pile of harvested and cured buds right now, how are you going to get patients (ie who will buy it from you). So take a deep breath, get a shit job like most everyone else, and then plan this all out right.

You can spend like 100 bucks on some cfls and pop some bagseed in the meantime, but you'll still need some soil, and those plants won't yield much for a first time grower, even if you do everything right.

People here will help you, but you should spend an hour or two reading a few threads here, and definitely read all the FAQ in the noobie section.

Would gas be more expensive than electric? Also, what about the noise the generator produces? I guess it wouldnt be running all night though.

As for OP. Sorry to hear about your situation. Im new to all of this as well, so I dont really have any advice for you as far as growing goes. However being homeless would suck! :(

I dont know if I could handle being homeless OR in jail. All the homeless I see are wearing old dirty ripped up clothing, asking for change, and sleeping under bridges/overpasses. Idk where you're from, but here where Im from its colllldddd in the winter time. At least in jail you get 3 hots and a cot. Good luck to you!

easier said than done, been trying to get a job for more than 3 years in 3 different countries, only worked for 2 months in this whole time

also, im afraid that as a society we've created a new class of citizens, modern slaves, anywere i've looked for a job, salaries are so low they barely allow you to cover rent and travel expenses, people i know with many degrees and respectable jobs need their income supplemented by their parents

back to the main point, how much yield do you think i can have from a grow room?

Not much, if you don't have the money to invest in one, and if you can't give us any specifics... like how big the room is, what kind of lighting you want to use, etc. Can you give us a dollar figure that you can invest in start-up? That might help us figure it out for you, but like I said, you're still months and months away from any potential income. You can do it, but you have to be realistic.

Do you live in an area where you can still grow outside? That might be the best way to get going for you, since you don't seem to have much to start up with.

Yes, coal, solar, and wind generated electricity (the kind that goes into your home) will always be cheaper and more efficient than any other form of fuel used to convert energy into electricity.

You've been looking for 3 years in 3 Countries? or Counties? You live in the states? That sucks. I know what you mean about the low salaries. Its like the cost of living is rising and rising, but the pay stays the same. After you commute to your job. Pay for gas, food, rent etc its like you're broke all over again and cant get ahead. Obama wants you to become government dependent like so many others. The more mouths the government and tax payers are forced to feed the more likely he is to get his way, which seems to be ultimately running the US into the ground lol I dont frown upon people selling to try to get ahead or get a little pocket money. We live in a crooked world.

Just think, the young people like me really get fucked. I'm only 19 and haven't found a job yet... I've applied everywhere it seems like.. Either they tell me I'm over qualified or under qualified... I don't care if I'm over qualified if I did I wouldn't have applied .. Just pisses m off. I've never had a job so what the hell can I do? Sell shit... Buy cheap shit off craigslist fix it, sell it for a little more.. A lot of work but money's money... Sometimes I even shovel snow, dig ditches etc for people... A odd job is better then no job but I need a real job to go on my record lol don't give up though keep trying.

You've never had a job? How can you be overqualified with no job experience? Odd jobs arent a bad way to go, if you're the "handy man" type. Peoples always needing something done that they dont wanna do. Whether it be mowing the yard, trimming hedges, shoveling snow, picking up rock etc etc. Take it from me... I used to mow with my old man as a side job and it payed more than my actual job ( at the time ). DO. GOOD. WORK! Dont go around half assing everything. If you do good work people will not only keep you around, but word of mouth is wildfire. Next, there friend(s) may need some work done. Before you know it you've got some kind of job to do every day or at least more than not. Since you're only 19 my advice would be to either go to college or some kind of Tech school. Learn a trade. Carpentry, plumbing, electrician etc etc. School sucks and nobody wants to do it, but it will be totally worth it in the long haul. Take me for example. I went to College 2 different times and it didnt work out. Then I got into a 2 year Radiology Program at a Vo Tech near me. Now Im making like $19/hr and getting 2 pay bumps per year. Im not "rolling in the big dough" or livin a life of luxury, but it pays the bills and I still have some left over to play with.

No clue how I'm over qualified. I honestly it's just a nicer way of saying " we don't need you" and I do the best work I can, and I think people are satisfied with it. I know a lot because in my home when I was a kid, I was the only one who did anything around the house m brothers and sisters sat on their asses. I can basically do anything I just figure some money's better then no money and it pays what I need paid so it works out decent I guess. I just wish I could get a job so I can build up retirement lol. I know it's a long ways away but I still think of it when I'm an old guy and can't work at all I'm going to need it. I never give up I fill out applications daily. If I see the same place hiring that I already applied for some time ago, I'll apply again. Number one thing is not to give up and keep lookin

lol this is totally off topic
