I do case, I use vermiculite! The casing layer is just a moisture barrier, thats why I use verm..it holds a TON of water! When I do cakes, I dunk in water for 24hrs in the fridge, then roll in verm(casing layer) Mushrooms fruit because they run out of food, and since mushrooms are 90% water when picked...a casing layer that holds alot of water is all you need! I have done alot of experiments, now when I make my pf cakes, I add wbs for extra nutes. As for gettin better yields, everyone on shroomtalk tells me they have never seen results like mine on cakes! I like doing bulk, but everyone needs a little variety!

casing layer- A layer of water retentive materials applied to substrate to encourage and enhance fruitbody production.
So yes...I do understand the casing layer! And for coir, I dont like using it because it isnt PH neutral like verm. And no....I dont use a GB and I have never had any contam problems! You dont need a GB if the environment is clean and sterile...just a waste of space in my eyes!

Functions of the casing layer-
1. To protect the colonized substrate from drying out.
2. To provide a humid microclimate for premordia formation and development.
3. To provide a water reservoir for the maturing mushrooms.
(this was out of The Mushroom Cultivator) and just to let you know, you dont need a casing layer when growing cubes!

So Phishhead, I think one of your problems might be the temps in your incubator. You said up there that they are in the mid 70s. But myc needs to be around 83-84 to properly colonize. Hope that helps with the future jars.

Yo Kush whats goin on, nice to see you over here too! We gotta keep building the shroom community. Thanks for all your help by the way. This guy knows his shit boys and girls!! I followed the "Kushcrosser rex effect tek" to the "T", and I just trayed up 8, 1 pint jars that I inoculated on dec. 2nd. They are looking great(check my sig).:mrgreen:

Hey Mega29 it only takes about a month. Some times a bit longer, some times a bit less. I have a mushroom grow going on, that I started on dec. 2, 08. I harvested a little more then an oz 2 days before New Years. That tray is already starting a second flush too. I also have another tray that is just about done with the first flush. If your thinking about growing shrooms Megx give it a try, and I used the wild bird seed, and its been working great.

So phishhead whats been goin on with the grow?

I changed my format back to the old way it was. Go into myrollitup, down to options ans settings, click edit options, go to the very bottom, and you can select the forum skin. Select blazn 07 and it will go back to the old format. Then you can rep.

Haha I cleaned my old PC from the garage yesterday and sterilised an injection.

Also put rye in water so bacterial spores can try to grow on water, for easy removal before cooking.

Today I have to boil the pots with the rye, and finish the syringe, tommorrow is innoculation day.... :)

My first homegrown shrooms...
