Sounds like a fun project...without a pump everything would have to drain to waste, unless you connected them in series using gravity to maintain a reservoir I guess that would be more of a DWC system though...about all I could find online was this http://www.littlegreenhouse.com/accessory/garden.shtml...and it doesn't look too promising unless you were to drain to waste. I'm interested to see what you come up with though.

Not sure if those cellmax rockwool cubes will retain too much water in the ratio's your using, worth a try though.

The only drawback I see to this system is having your tray full of nute water exposed to the light, heating up, and picking up all the dead leaves, and other fall out. I've been using a passive hydro system for some time now just didn't know it was called passive hydro. I've called it soilponics. You may want to consider using hempy buckets, its passive hydro and very easy to do.
Also if your res/tray is exposed to light and it has nute solution in, you'll get a lot of algae and horrible slimy stuff growing, I've found anyway.

This doesn't happen in hempy because your res is part of the pot (the bottom inch or 2) so it's not directly exposed to the light.
